Since we have some extra cap next season I'd rather sign him to a 1 year deal at a low cap hit. Next season If he has another good season then I would offer him a long term deal since we could fit it into the cap.

I am a huge fan of Bear and I would like nothing more for him to succeed but I would offer him something like 2M for 3 years and go from there.

I think Stauff was saying this a while ago, that Bear has no arbitration rights, so he's likely going to sign a 1 year deal at a low-ish number, then get his extension later on.

I think that's realistic. Similar to Nurse's bridge, but Nurse was much higher profile than Bear. I know draft position matters less as time goes on, but not that much time has gone on. He's only had 1 successful NHL year, so I think fans should brace for a better bargain than you'd think.

I know... but even with a flat cap I'm always worried about kids getting huge raises. I guess I'm conditioned to expect it given what we were doing a decade ago.
