I tried to play it safe so people won't get after me yelling about Lidstrom and Forsberg and who ever else.

Kronwall (Nicklas) yes, Lidstrom, erh, let's wait a little.

Someone being a very good defender yes.

Someone being a 6 time Norris winner? Well that's a wee bit more.

Let's wait until Dman X has at least one Norris before we compare to 6 time winner Lidstrom.

If all things go well he will be in an Ottawa uniform within 2 seasons.

In my opinion his style is like combination of Brian Campbell and Kimmo Timonen, a great puck mover.

But i feel that during the next couple of seasons in Sweden he will develop into a Lidstrom type player and be a key power play specialist here in Ottawa

(Note: As good as Karlsson is this would have been a good spot to pick Goaltender Chet Pickard from Tri-city who was goalie of the year and showcased some of his tremendous skills this season.)

Maybe the scouting staff believes next years crop of goalies is much better.

I think you misunderstood what we were talking about. I was discussing how if we signed Sundin, and had Regin and both our Karlssons play with Sundin and Alfie that it would be a thrill to them to play with two of the greatest players from their country (Lidstrom and Forsberg being the other two).

But yeah, I wouldn't go crazy comparing this guy to any players other than Kronwall (due to size and similiar playing style) until he plays a season or two in the NHL.

<nil> hope no.
There's no local TV worth talking about.

It's a small country, GBG Metro area is just about a mill people.

Let's hope that some serious TV channel covers it.

But I got tickets so I don't care :)

The game is on a thursday during the SEL regular season, I'd bet we already sold the rights to Canal+ and Holmgren has his hotel room bocked. I know it's only an exhibition game but the only competition for game of the night is Modo vs. Timrå.

I think its pretty imperative that Karlsson play atleast half a season in Bingo before playing in the NHL.. European Defenseman I think need to adjust more to the NHL game than CHL/NCAA defenseman do... We can bring both Karlssons and Petersson over as well. I think Mattias Karlsson will be in binghamton this coming season right?

Elitserien (SEL) is probably the best place in the world to let young defensemen and centers develop. All teams play smart defensive first hockey, typical Swedish style game. Just look how many Swedes are in the NHL right now and they have all been schooled in on 3rd and 4th lines with various SEL clubs. The SEL is superior to the AHL in developing young talents, especially Swedish prospect. Let Karlsson get used to senior hockey this season and then give him one year is a top pairing defenseman in the SEL before going over. It worked for Enström, Kronwall, Strålman, etc...

I think Nashville would have taken Pickard at 15 anyway. I imagine that we were only able to move up based on an agreement that we would not take Pickard.

Isn't Regin from Denmark?

Damn right!:yo:

Asquaredx2, Regin played with Timra...

He is Danish, so he is like kinda Swedish, he is an Ostrogoth, but the Swedes are just plain Goths, notice the name Göteborg, english = Gothenburg, it's the same people. Just like the Slavs are a seperate sect of Goths from the Heuneberg.

Everyone in Europe is pretty much related, and the peeps in Göteborg share the accent of the Danes.

Us Estonians and Finns are *NOT* related in any way to any of the other Europeans, and happy thanks to be so :)

Actually, you guys are Ugaric, and you are genetically traceable to the Hungarians, whom are HUNS a seperate Goth division, some of the Finns mixed with the Samis, although you guys are related to us, but you just won't admit it. You can't do any research on google because of your nationalism.

HUNS = GOTHS

In conclusion, everyone in Europe is related.

Good pick. Karlsson really impressed me.

Your defence could look very scary in a season or two. Say you end up signing a guy like Hainsey.

Hainsey Phillips
Mezaros Lee
Volchenkov Karlsson

That defence has everything (skill, speed and toughness).

Interview on Team 1200

Hey,

Someone mentioned an interview Karlsson gave on the Team. Does anyone know where I can find it? I couldn't seem to find it anywhere.

Thanks,

B

Team1200.com often has there interviews on the site and I know the Sens official site keeps an archive of interviews done. Check those out.

Once upon time in early prehistory a group of people migrated from east and when they reached the baltic sea in what nowadays is called Estonia they found a large sign.

It had an arrow pointing south that said "good climate and nice wine" and one pointing north that said "horrible climate and no wine".

And so it happened that those who could read became Hungarians, those who couldn't read became Finns :)

And the minority that couldn't decide stayed and became Estonians.

Today's Stevenson article on Karlsson is a little better now that he's gotten over his defensive instinct that springs up whenever the Senators pass over a 67 prospect.

Mostly a rehash of articles written for the Sens website, though.
http://www.ottawasun.com/Sports/Columnists/Stevenson_Chris/2008/06/22/5950351.html

Well, at least it's good that Stevenson has decided that Sens management didn't automatically waste their pick.

What's interesting is the comment that Peterson was ranked 29th on the Sens list. I'd love to see in any given year, just how widely varied each team's lists are heading into a draft. As fans, we're all judging things based on the consensus views of central scouted lists, but, I'm guessing that each team has strong opinions on each prospect, and, just because a guy is ranked high, it doesn't mean that it's someone their wiling to draft, even if they become available much later.

Who did Erik beat out to win the Best Defenceman award at the U-18 Championships. Was Doughty, Hedman, Bogosian or any other highly ranked defenceman playing in that tournament? Hopefully he can dominate again at the World Juniors this comming season and take home the award again. I hate to say this but with Erik and Andre playing for Sweden, I might actually cheer for the Swedes to win it all, mainly because we won't have any prospects playing for Canada. Anyways I can't wait for the sens game against Frolunda and then the World Juniors. I was absolutely thrilled we got Karlsson, and i really think he will turn out to be an amazing pick and end up competing with Doughty and Bogosian, as to who will be the best defenceman from this draft.

In conclusion, everyone in Europe is related.

It is true that the GOTHS invaded much of Europe and the Visigoths burnt down Rome.

But the Finno-Ugric peoples were the first settlers in the north just as the glaciers were leaving ~5000 BC. and ethnically and language wise have no relation to the Indo-European hordes. It is thought that the Finno-Ugric people origined just west of the Ural Mountains, and are actually more closely related to the Turkic peoples that western europeans.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finno-ugric

Not to say that over the years with all the inter-breeding with conquering nations that we are at all like what we originally were.

Just wanted to send grats on karlsson. Before the draft I had him pegged to go earlier then 30th also :P

I thought the habs would pick him up at 25th but obviously your scouts did their homework. He looks like he's going to develope into a good player, just needs to bulk up a little bit more as he's small now, may take some time to develope too but whatever, I think he was an awesome pick. Congrats.

I was really hoping Murray would draft Karlsson. I think with his skillset and attitude he will be able to develop into a great defenceman for the sens.

I can't wait to see how he fares at the sens development camp. Hopefully Randy Lee can get him on a program and help Karlsson become physically ready for the NHL.
