Pettersson is the more complete player. This deal hurts Vancouver's team game. Only way this deal were to happen is in an offseason and only if Pettersson wants out and only if NJ adds.

The Canucks do this because of doubt regarding Pettersson's willingness to re-sign long term

Is there much doubt here at all? The team is rolling and a division leader. They have an elite defenseman and elite goalie. He has excellent forwards to play with.

Everything was framed that he liked being in Vancouver but he wanted to be in the playoffs and compete for a Cup. Mission accomplished? It would be different if they were a bubble team and he was carrying them mostly by himself.

You can have a thought exercise about which player and contract you would prefer but Vancouver won’t trade EP because he’s expensive.
