The World Junior Championships have just finished and several of our spotlighted players participated. Canada won the tournament, defeating the US 4-1 in the finals.

Axelsen – Hephaestus has reached the tier one league in Finland, having graduated from Tappara A-Jrs to Tappara. In 2 games early in the season in the junior league, he had 3 goals and 2 assists. Since being called up, he has 5 goals and 7 assists in 22 games, while getting third line minutes. It is possible that the Blackhawks sign their first round pick from last summer in the coming months.

Azzaroni – Despite only having 5 points in 12 games for the Ottawa 67s, Azzaroni was a point-per-game player for the US at the WJC, scoring 6 in 6 games. Azzaroni was traded on 11/25/07 in exchange for Bobby MacIntyre. He is now ranked 119th.

Bettman – The New York City native is having a great freshman campaign for the Fighting Sioux of North Dakota, tallying a 15-0-7 record with a 2.27 GAA and a .905 save percentage. The Flyers prospect has yet to register a shutout, but does have 2 assists in his NCAA career.

Cann – Washington Capitals’ prospect Mexi Cann has 35 points in 35 games for the Quebec Remparts, staying steady at a point-per-game pace, he is the only player on the list to have a better than a point-per-game average so far in his career, with 51-52-103 in 99 games. He was a surprising cut from the US squad for the WJC.

Donahue – Suddenly a point-per-game player, Pheelicks Donahue has 19 goals and 23 assists in 41 games for the Mooseheads in Halifax. Twenty-one of those points game on specialty teams. The Avalanche are hoping the 6’6†Donahue can continue to round out his game and become an effective second line scorer at the NHL level.

Dover – Dover is stepping up his game for the London Knights. A little. Last season’s 13-8-21 with a -13 in 70 games is this season’s 12-7-19 with a -5 in 42. He’s going to need to make a big jump if he hopes to play in the NHL some day.

Duddy – Duddy hasn’t progressed quite the way the Hurricanes were hoping he would when they drafted him in the 3rd round last June. While on pace to set new career highs for the Red Deer Rebels, his 14 goals and 16 assists in 40 games aren’t exactly stellar. He has improved his +/- from a -14 to a +9, though.

Pole – Also sliding down the rankings is Dick Pole, the grinder from Hell. Now in the 27 spot, he has 18 goals and 18 assists in 40 games for the Winterhawks, vastly improving on last season’s 14-7-21 numbers in 30 fewer games.

Rose – Finishing tied for second in WJC scoring behind Canada’s Nathan MacKinnon, Rose scored 1 goal and added 8 assists for the surprising German squad, which nearly beat Canada to advance to the finals, falling short to a MacKinnon power play tally late in the game. In 24 games for Koln in the DEL, Rose has 23 points and has been outstanding in a shutdown role.

Stig – Heavily scouted by 4 NHL teams [all in Canada, interestingly enough], Stig has fallen down the draft rankings to the number 24 spot. In 38 games with Windsor, the stay at home puck mover has 4 goals and 25 assists, along with a +15 rating.

Von Hinten – Also finishing tied for second in WJC scoring behind Canada’s Nathan MacKinnon, Marcus Von Hinten’s 5 goals and 9 points in 7 games was a great showing. He also played over 3 minutes fewer per game than MacKinnon while serving as captain of the squad. In 34 games with the Spokane Chiefs, he has 16 goals and 29 points. Rumors have it that the Penguins are looking to sign him during the summer.

Keep it up Mexi Cann!!!!

I think the US team was concerned over (unfounded) rumors he was born south of the border and not in Baja, CA :biglaugh:

Falling? Bah...

Still being scouted at least, if only in America's Hat. Any chance of letting it slip which teams?

And for being a stay at home guy I still have 29 points in 38 games. Who doesn't want a piece of that?

May 1, 2008 – Final rankings

Axelsen – The big 18-year-old Tappara skater has scouts torn on his potential. Half of the scouts we polled say he has top line potential, while the other half see him as no better than a 3rd liner. All scouts agree, however, that he oozes class, is a superb passer, and is a consummate professional.
42GP: 12G, 15A, +15, 12PiM, 84 Shots, ATOI 13:11

Azzaroni – Ranked 106th for next month’s NHL draft, he is a highly professional player with good patience with the puck. Scouts say the 6’ Ottawa 67s skater might have a future as a 4th liner, in the mold of Michael Ryder.
41GP: 11G, 3A, 57PiM, 104 Shots, ATOI 2421

Bettman – Whether or not he makes it as an NHL starter, scouts say he reminds them of a smaller but better Ben Bishop. He is very ambitious, has outstanding endurance, and has very quick hands. He does, however, need to improve his consistency.
40GP: 29-1-10, 2.09 GAA, .913sv%, 2SO

Cann – 100% of the scouts we talked to said that Mexi is a future first liner, like a slower Patrick Berglund. The 6’3†California native is noted for his classiness on and off the ice. He is known as a faceoff specialist and a solid all-around offensive player.
61GP: 30G, 33A, +2, 56PiM, 200 Shots, ATOI 26:07

Donahue – Most scouts see him as having 3rd line potential, like a poor man’s James Neal. He is strong-willed and has a knack for pulling unexpected moves. He is very good at finding open ice and has impressive physical strength. The 6’6†Halifax Mooseheads winger could make a push for a roster spot in Colorado next season.
70GP: 27G, 33A, +19, 56PiM, 164 Shots, ATOI 25:13

Dover – At best a future 3rd liner, Ben has been compared to a slower Bobby Butler. He is a very strong player, a high-energy hustler, and has a big shot. He is unranked for the draft, however.
65GP: 25G, 14A, +3, 74PiM, 158 Shots, ATOI 24:11

Duddy – He should play in a top 9 forward role at the NHL level, though most scouts see him as a depth scorer in the mold of Milan Hejduk. He has excellent speed, hits well, and has a dangerous wrist shot. The 6’3†Las Vegas native will do anything to win.
70GP: 31G, 32A, +29, 184 Shots, ATOI 25:24

Pole – Dick Pole positively exploded this season. Ranked 27th, he gushes physical strength and is good at finding openings. He is a complete team player and a fantastic two-way talent. On a similar note, he will do whatever it takes to score. Is that enough euphemisms for now?
70GP: 37G, 25A, +25, 36PiM, 205 Shots, ATOI 19:24

Rose – If his skating speed were better, he’d be a shoe-in for a top line playmaker role in the NHL. As it stands now, scouts are torn if he can pull that off, or if he is better suited in a 3rd line shutdown role. He is a punishing hitter, incredibly strong, and will take a hit for the benefit of the team. Scouts compare him to Brian Boyle.
45GP: 29G, 24A, +25, 24PiM, 139 Shots, ATOI 24:52

Stig – Possessing top 2 potential, he has been described as a bigger, better version of Dion Phaneuf. It is confusing, therefore, to see him ranked 26th for the upcoming draft. He played 5 games for Great Britain internationally, notching an assist.
66GP: 14G, 40A, +29, 68PiM, 147 Shots, ATOI 21:20

Von Hinten – Another player compared to Milan Hejduk, scouts say that he has top six goal scoring potential. He has good physical strength, superb vision, and is an excellent passer. The 6’4†German is a very offensive-minded skater.
64GP: 28G, 29A, +28, 197 Shots, ATOI 25:15

.82 ppg as a stay at home face pounding defenseman with Top Pair potential and I continue to fall?

Must be that lazy Brit stereotype. :sarcasm:

Bettman isn't gonna be an NHL starter...but the improvement in stats is quite crazy from the USHL to UND.

Bump to keep on first page. Anyone got a game going on?

Got the Blues their first Stanley Cup then traded off all the aging vets and mid round picks for the top 3 picks in the draft, wound up with two damn good defensemen and an 18 year old forward who's very nearly already the best player on my team. Physical stats all in the green and everything else at at least 14.

I love when the game just says, "Screw it, throw em a Gretzky."

I play with the Sabres, added Sharp, Ryan, Giordano, Seabrook, Yakupov, Barkov, Bartschi.

We are ranked first in the league, but continue to find ways to lose games.

Note: I didn't want to **** over the league by trading for all the star players but after a few seasons when your team is ranked top 3 and misses the playoffs all the time, you're in **** you mode.

I will have an update to this soon. I've done the simming, just need to write. I've been more focused on my short story lately. Sorry.
