Since we're kind of in a lull here, how about an avatar contest? Whoever breaks the single-season team scoring record (446 goals for) gets to set my avatar, and I have to keep it until NHL 14 comes out.

Rules:
Sim only
Injuries, CPU trades, salary cap, and waivers on
No trade/FA/waiver claim restrictions
Start with any team you choose
Must do at least one write-up per season showing your roster and record (and would be super cool if you shared your strategy too). Also obviously share how many goals your team scored and in what year.
Can do as many seasons as you like or restart your dynasty as many times as you like
No save/reload crap
Game begins immediately and ends when someone breaks the record or NHL 14 is released, whichever happens first
Avatar must comply with the site rules

How about it?

Just whipped this up really quick:

- chose Pittsburgh
- traded Fleury, Kennedy, Zlobin, Pouliot and Bennett for Ovechkin + some scrubs
- traded Murray, Despres, and Morrow for Markov, a 1st and two scrubs
- traded Martin and a 2nd for Shattenkirk (just for salary reasons)

Ovechkin - Crosby - Iginla
Jokinen - Malkin - Neal
Kunitz - Sutter - Dupuis
Jeffrey - Adams - Cooke

Shattenkirk - Letang
Markov - Orpik
Niskanen - Eaton

Vokoun - Grubauer

About to start simming the season. We'll be in cap trouble next season but I want to see how many we can score in year one.

So we finished with 51 wins. Our goal total?

....

....

....

....247.

Ovi had 95 points. Geno had 93 points. Not terrible. But Crosby only had 80.
So much fail.

After Crosby's 80 points we have Shattenkirk with 47, Iggy with 42, Neal with 41, Letang with 39, and Jokinen with 37.:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

None of those players missed significant time. They all played 79-82 games.

Good job EA :clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

----

In the second round we lost to the Rangers in five games after the Canes took us to 7
So much fail.

:nucks 2013-2014 season review
8246637.jpg

The Canucks season was one filled with uncertainty and high expectations. Some people wondered if the aging core of the team had what it takes to win it all again, and if the Sedins would want to return after the season, and if so how much they would want and whether that would handicap the teams financials. The team finished the season 48-28-6 good enough for 1st in the west but 4th in the overall standings. The team defeated St.Louis Blues in the playoffs for the 2nd straight year, doing so in seven games, and the team defeated the up and coming Columbus Blue Jackets in seven games as well. However the team was shut down by Shea Weber and the Nashville Predators and eliminated in the conference finals in 5 games, despite great play from Roberto Luongo. H.Sedin led the team in playoff scoring with 16pts in 19gp, following an 83pts effort during the regular season. The Predators went on to the Cup Finals only to get swept by the Washington Capitals. At the draft Florida had the 1st overall pick for the 2nd year in a row and went with a surprise choice and picked Sam Reinhart over Aaron Ekblad despite already having Nathan Mackinnon and Jonathan Huberdeau. Ekblad was selected 2nd overall by the Minnesota Wild. The biggest story of the draft came when the New York Rangers acquired Marian Hossa from the Chicago Blackhawks with former 10th overall pick Dylan Mcilrath heading to the Blackhawks as the main piece of the deal. The Canucks made a trade to unload some salary at the draft sending David Booth to the Avalanche for the 44th pick in the draft. The NHL awards quickly followed and there were some surprises:

Art Ross: Tyler Seguin (98pts)
Hart: Steven Stamkos (89pts 77gp)
Norris: Mike Green (57pts)
Lady Byng: Steven Stamkos
Calder: Nikita Kucherov (81pts 73gp)
Conn Smythe: Brayden Holtby
Vezina: Evgeni Nabokov
Jennings: Roberto Luongo and Jose Theodore
Masterton: Nicklas Grossman
Selke: Pavel Datsyuk
Lindsay: Evgeni Nabokov
Richard: Alexander Ovechkin (58g)
President's Trophy: Pittsburgh Penguins

Following the NHL awards the Canucks were quickly able to get both of the Sedin's signed to identical, cap friendly deals for 5 years at $37.75M.The deals will carry an AAV of $7.550M. The team then resigned forward Chris Kreider to a 3 year $9.9M contract with an AAV of $3.3M. The team enters free agency with around $9.5M to spend but a few notable RFA's in Dale Weise, Yann Sauve and Henrik Tomernes. Zach Kassian is also an RFA but according to sources Canucks management is trying to trade him while his value is high as they no longer believe he is a part of their future.

2013-2014 lineup

D.Sedin (91) - H.Sedin (90) - Kreider (82)

2014-2015 Trade deadline Update
"Toews and Kane Era over in Chicago"
88-19.jpg

The 3pm EST trade deadline came and went with two of the biggest moves in recent history were made. The Chicago Blackhawks decided to blow the team up as they shipped away the two cornerstones of it's franchise in Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. The 1st deal occurred between the Blackhawks and Panthers which sent the injured Kane (injured for remainder of season, but should be back for late 1st round beginning of round 2) to the Florida Panthers for last year's 1st overall pick Sam Reinhart, a 2016 1st round pick and prospect Steven Anthony (previously acquired from the Canucks in the Jose Theodore trade). The Hawks then decided they wanted to move captain Jonathan Toews as well so he was sent packing to the Edmonton Oilers for a 2015 1st round pick, a 2016 1st round pick and defenceman Andrew Ference. The Oilers are now poised to be Stanley Cup contenders and if they are able to resign Toews in the offseason they could be looking at a potential dynasty. The Panthers are taking a bit of a gamble on Kane, as Kane is a potential UFA and out for the remainder of the regular season. To make this investment worth it the team would have to advance past the 1st round, or resign Kane in the offseason. If the team is able to do so they will have a forward core built around Huberdeau, Mackinnon and Patrick Kane which could be deadly for years to come. As for the Canucks the team made their moves earlier in the season acquiring a 1st round pick in 2015 from both the Capitals and Penguins for Yann Sauve and Bill Sweatt respectively. There were reports that the Canucks were proposed a deal that could have netted the team Patrick Kane but the team felt the asking price was to high for a player who is out for the remainder of the regular season and could very well leave on July 1st. There were also rumors about Kassian being moved but those didn't come to fruition so the team will stick with the 24 year old power forward for now.

Off-Season and Draft Report

Oilers overloaded on quality Defenders

Defenders Darnell Nurse (Left), Oscar Klefbom (Right) are ready to make the jump to the NHL but are fighting for playing spots.

We had our own First Round Pick this year, and because we were Stanley Cup Victors we selected 30th Overall, we did however have two 2nd Round picks including Montreal's, 38th Overall, and three 3rd Round Picks.

Edmonton's 2019 Draft Selections
# | Name | Age | Position | Overall | Potential
30|Niklas Lilja|19|LW|67|3 1/2
38|Willie Gardner|19|LW|68|3 1/2

180|Darren Gannon|19|LW|54|1 1/2

Niklas is a Sniper who hopefully turns out to be a Sleeper at #30, we also were happy with our two 2nd Round Picks, Wille being a big-bodied TWF and Mikko being a Grinder, that we were happy to got at #60.

We have every single player back from last years Stanley Cup Winning team, our Offence is the exact same but our Defence has Rookie Oscar Klefbom taking over Evan Scott's RD 3rd pairing position and we also have Rookie Darnell Nurse in our Disposal. Also instead of Back-up Olivier Roy, who's in the Minors, Rookie Goalie Simon Bergeron is backing up. We feel like we can contend again, but we have atleast 8 Solid Defenders, including some players in the Minors who would be brought up if we needed them. Any suggestions?

Kings' Defense No Problem for Wild

402A0001_2_JPEG_SCREENSHOT_wkC_zps835284e0.jpg

Assistant captain Jack Connolly celebrates after netting a goal on Kings netminder Jonathan Quick.

The Los Angeles Kings' defensive style of play seemed like the perfect match for the Minnesota Wild's high-powered offense. It seemed like if anyone could stop the Wild, it would be the Kings. Many predicted that the veteran Kings would pull an upset over the young Wild, but they didn't come very close. LA was only able to score 5 goals on Minnesota over four games, as the Wild pulled off a sweep. Rookie goaltender Nathan Lindsay played fantastic, posting a 1.25 GAA while facing a lot of shots. The Wild's first line led the way on offense, with William Karlsson, Kent Scatchard, and Tom McLennan all scoring 6 points each. Up next is the Columbus Blue Jackets in round two.

Game 1: 2-1 Victory
Game 2: 5-0 Victory
Game 3: 4-2 Victory
Game 4: 3-2 Victory

All-star Break update

:jets 2012-2013
Midway point review
When GM Zero took over the Jets before the 12-13 season, a long-term mindset was in place, the fans, ownership and players knew this would be a project.
The pre-season started out great as the Jets went 3-0-1 in the latter part of September. Before the season began, GM Zero decided to make a small impact by signing free agent centres Gilbert Brule and Sami Pahlsson in order to improve the Jets bottom 6 depth and add a veteran presence on the 4th line.
The Jets have been dissapointing so far this year, sitting in the 29th spot in the overall league standings with an 18-23-3 record. The veterans are the players doing the best work, Olli Jokinen leads the team with 14 goals, Evander Kane and Dustin Byfuglien both lead the squad in points with 29 after 44 GP.
Here is the depth chart:
Kane 84 (SNP)-Little 82 (PLY)-Wheeler 83 (PWF)
Ladd 83 (PWF)-Jokinen 82 (PWF)-Antropov 81 (PLY)
Brule 79 (SNP)-Burmistrov 77 (PLY)-Miettinen 19 (TWF)
Wellwood 77 (PLY)-Santorelli 78 (TWF)-Pahlsson 75 (GRN)
----------------------------------------------------------
Enstrom 81 (OFD)-Bogosian 84 (TWD)
Hainsey 83 (TWD)-Byfuglien 87 (TWD)
Stuart 81 (DFD)-Clitsome 78 (DFD)
----------------------------------------------------------
Pavelec 82 (HYB)
Montoya 74 (HYB)

Quite an unusual top 10 if I'm honest 5 goalies in the top 10 is almost unheard of, definately interesting draft as we currently hold the 2nd overall pick.Other interesting names in the first round are Drouin(15),Mantha(13),Mackinnon(11),Klimchuk(14),Bowey(17) and Morrisey(18).
This is my first report so feedback is always greatly appreciated.

Zero, I like the information you give, but you need a bit more formatting (it's a bit tough to read). If you can do it, pictures add a little something. Overall, it's good work - when NHL '14 comes out, look for us to do longer, more elaborate posts at more points during the season. We'll usually have a "Season Outlook", "Trade Deadline", "Playoffs" (per round), "Draft", and "Off-Season" thread - with Twitter updates sprinkled in. We're just getting lazy due to the season being over, the game rosters being completely out of date to start, and general off-season malaise :)

It's a good first attempt though, and it's always interesting to read new dynasties, especially by new contributors :) Keep it up!

Interesting draft rankings - are you using the most updated roster update? Drouin, Mack, and Mantha are always in the top 10.

Trade deadline 2012-2013

620-ron-hainsey-thumb-620xauto-252469.jpg

After a sub-par season thus far, the trade deadline was an opportunity for GM Zero to shake up his Jets squad. The players knew that changes would be made and that virtually no one was safe.
The first piece of business for Zero was before the march 5th deadline when he moved veteran Defensman Ron Hainsey and prospect forward Patrice Cormier to Chicago in exchange of Kyle Beach and Rostislav Olesz
Kyle+Beach+Jussi+Rynnas+NHL+Rookie+Tournament+CSXQQXUY3xol.jpg

What was considered a risky move by many could turn out amazing as Kyle Beach is somewhat of a reclamation project as he has dissapointed so far since being drafted in the 2008 NHL draft at the 11th spot ahead of a group of notable players such as Myers,Karlsson,Eberle,Ennis and Carlson. However,Beach still has a remote possibility of turning in to a snarly pain in rear-end whilst still scoring 20+ goals, GM Zero might see something in him that other's don't.
cormier.jpg

As the actual deadline approached the rumour mill entered overdrive as the Jets became a player bank for other NHL squads, the fire-sale was well and truly on.
The Jets made another significant trade as they moved Gilbert Brule and Eric Tangradi to the LA Kings in a swap for prospect Tyler Toffoli and a 3rd round draft choice.
tyler-toffoli-r109837_is_right_side_bar_medium.jpg

With this trade the Jets move a pair of bottom 6 players in exchange for one of the hottest up-and-coming winger prospects in the world of hockey, Toffoli was being shopped by the Kings and reports indicate that the kings were looking for an upgrade at their 3rd line centre spot and Brule was on the market, the negotiations were swift and within an hour the deal was complete.
So the Deadline recap for the Jets looks like this:
:hawks
Ron Hainsey 83 TWD
Patrice Cormier 71 GRN

:jets
Kyle Beach (4 star potential) 72 PWF
Rostislav Olesz 74 PLY

:kings2
Eric Tangradi 74 PWF
Gilbert Brule 79 SNP

:jets
Tyler Toffoli (4 star potential) 73 SNP
2013 3rd round pick
The Jets will now look toward the future as these moves not only bring in youth and skill they also free-up capspace in order to extend the many players whose contracts are up at the end of the season whilst still gaining something in return.

If you picked up some prospects in the draft, trade the worst one(s) for a starting goalie. Besides goaltending, that team looks good.

Great writeups, everyone!

This upcoming Avs season is one that I think I actually have a chance at some decent goal totals. Gonna have to micromanage the lines though, whereas I just let the Assistant Coach do them the last 2 years.

I signed D. Sedin and Lundqvist in the offseason :D

End of Season

The Winnipeg Jets finished the 12-13 campaign wit a bang as they won 8 of their last ten games to pus themselves out of the basement of the league and in to the 24th spot.

Jets fans were dissapointed as their beloved Jets missed the playoffs and won themselves out of a top pick, or did they....

The Jets entered the 2013 draft with high hopes as they had 5 picks in the first three rounds

However, seconds before the draft the Jets pulled the trigger on a massive couple deals.
GM Zero was offered the 16th pick from Columbus Blue Jackets along with a 2014 7th round draft choice in Exchange of Sami Pahlsson, the Jets own 2nd rounder (#37) and Prospect forward Ivan Telegin, they accepted the deal.
Then came a huge blockbuster minutes before the first selection, The Rangers traded Dylan McIlrath and their own 1st round pick (3rd Overall) to the Jets in exchange of Defensman Mark stuart and DustinByfuglien, the blockbuster deal meant that the Jets now had 2 top 10 picks and three 1st round picks (3,7,16)

The draft finally started as the Ducks announced their selection of Nathan Mackinnon, following the selection, their cross-town rivals the LA Kings selected Seth Jones
The pair were battling for the #1 position all season and it turned out that the Halifax scorer was selected first overall and the hulking winterhawks blue-liner went #2. Both were rivals nationally and at the junior level and both would remain rivals as they both went to California.

The Jets were on the clock and had an array of options, after 5 minutes of crunch time discussion at the Jets draft table they decided to go with Halifax Moosehead Winger Jonathan Drouin
The tricky winger was ranked number 1 by jets scouts as his electrifying play alongside 1st overall pick Nathan Mackinnon was enough to earn his stripes. This move gives Winnipeg an array of excellent young forwards such as Kane,Wheeler,Little and Scheifele.

The day was far from over as the jets now had to focus on their own pick, the 7th overall selection. As they approached the one family in the crowd was on the edge of their seats and when GM Zero called Ryan Pulock's name a part went off, the Jets first home-town selection since their rebirth in 2011. Pulock was widely considered the 2nd best defensman in the draft class behind Jones, Pulock possesses a booming shot which was clocked at 104 mph.

Finally, the jets now had one last pick in the first round at 16, with the mid-first round pick they decided to draft Max Domi son of former Leafs enforcer Tie Domi. Although they share the same name, they do not share the same skill-set, Max is an electric offensive dynamo whilst Tie is a fourth line grinder.
