don't think mcdonagh would have developed in mtl the way he has in ny. he'd probably would have gotten the beaulieu/tinordi treatment and not the 24+ minutes a game in his second season he got in ny.

A lot of these can be addressed internally if we're patient with our defensive prospects. I think cup contenders tend to have a second good center that could be #1 on weaker teams. I think Plekanec could be that guy but only if he plays with offensive talent and we have a third centre that takes over his defensive duties (to a greater extent than Malhotra/Eller).

so there is 60 centres better than Plekanec? I'd be hard pressed to find 20.

Plekanec is in the top 30 scorers in the league at C this year, and better defensively than most of them. He is in fact a first line player capable of handling 18-20 minutes per game. He is not a star first line offensive player, though, I will grant that.

However, Plekanec is a splendid 2nd line center to have, if Galchenyuk proves over the long haul he can handle being 1-C!

Long-term, it would be great if we could break the centremen minutes down like this:
19 Galchenyuk
18 Plekanec
15 Eller
8 Malhotra (FO specialist and D-zone starts)

Pacioretty got the Beaulieu/Tinordi treatment. He didn't end up too bad!

Can't believe people don't see Markov as a #2 defenseman.

He seems more like our #1 defenseman this year, but obviously this is not true in the grand scheme of things and not likely to continue that way once Subban picks up his game.

Markov is a legit #2, so I think what we really need for this year is a #3 defenseman.A defenseman clear cut above the rest of what we have excluding Subban and Markov.McDonagh would make us incredibly stronger, so **** you Gainey for that.Especially since McDonagh is exactly the type of defenseman we need, not overly offensive, good first pass, very good defensively.I think Emelin is doing a good job overall, but he's a 4th defenseman, not a 3rd at all.

Thing is though, Markov is a legit #2, but that's today.Next year it's likely he won't be, or at least we can be sure he won't be in 2 or 3 years. So we really need to find someone who can fill his role as the 2nd man behind Subban for the years to come.

As for the forwards, I don't see any urgent need.We have a pretty stable group of forwards and all three top lines can produce here and there. It would be good to have a Getzlaf or a Malkin, but they don't grow on trees so too bad.I don't see the need to "add depth" just for the sake of adding it, as I think this forward group is quite deep.

I guess the key term is "dynasty" in which case, yes, you need some very special players in all the core positions. However, dynasties are things of the past thanks to salary cap. Not sure we'll see 3-4 consecutive stanley cups from the same team.

I guess what im saying is define "dynasty".

I think he would. He was a higher draft pick and he's much better than they are. His only problem was that Gainey was desperate to get an experienced center. It was a brutal error of judgment on his part. However, time marches on and the Habs were able to draft Subban. As of now, the Habs are probably two or three stars away from being the best team in the East and fully competitive with LA, Anaheim, and Chicago. Unfortunately, they're too good to be in a position to draft blue chip prospects. Who will be the Habs' most formidable competition in the next five years? I don't think it'll be the Bruins. They don't have a cornucopia of great prospects and their top players will be in their 30s. I predict it'll be the Bolts, the Isles, the Panthers. and the Sabres.

Guys, just to lighten the sting of mcdonagh, we probably wouldn't have been able to draft a player as good as Galchenyuk if Mcdonagh helped us win a few extra games.
