If you think Dahlbeck is a better defenseman than Hanifin then you should probably stop watching hockey.

The most positive thing I can say about Dahlbeck in the limited time we saw him is he wasn't a step down from Carrick. But both of them were clearly the #6 D when they played and worse than TVR has played so far, which puts them jockeying for #7.

Vegas leads the league in points %. Their defense is comprised almost entirely of bottom pairing cast-offs (Luca Sbisa, Brad Hunt, Derek Engelland, Brayden McNabb). Their #1 D (Nate Schmidt) is/was considered a TVR-level asset at the expansion Draft.

Vegas is currently on their 3rd string goalie Dansk and he leads the league with a 0.959 sv%. This isn't a surprise and the two former goalies Subban (0.936 sv%) and Fleury (0.925 sv%) are also among the top in the league.

Arguably the worst defense in the league (on paper) playing in front of a 3rd string expansion goalie is producing at an elite level.

I feel like that is worth pointing out with the all the Chicken Littles running around. It's a long season.

Ah yes. The Hanifin rose colored glasses still on I see.
You mean like Hanifin's sweet no-look feed to the Duck all alone in front of our net for their 2nd goal?
yep. No way Dahlbeck is good enough to do that.

Oh so you’re blind. That would certainly explain your conclusions, carry on.

Hanifin has his man tied up. It was everybodies favorite not-captain Mr. Skinner sending the errant pass on his forehand.

Let's not mention Skinner is on pace for 70 goals...and is likely to cool down soon.

That's true about him cooling off (although he's on pace for 57, not 70). At the same time, I can't believe that Aho (on pace for 0 goals), Williams (on pace for 8 goals), Faulk (on pace for 8 goals) won't turn it around.

What YOU don't realize is Hanifin has TELEPATHIC powers and he mentally WILLED that puck onto the tape of Grant's stick. What's more, even with those powers of telepathy, he's totally ineffective when sitting on the bench. You'd think he'd make a little effort, you know, to help his teammates out or something. The kid is gahhhbage.

Trade a 20yo defenseman so we have something else to bitch about in two years... he’s learning the nhl game and has looked amazing at some times and horrid at others... ffs this is Pronger all over again, only this time it gets debated by a bunch of angry fans after an overtime loss

The one thing I like about the new face off enforcement is that when there is a totally stupid penalty like Pesce’s delay of game penalty where he just batted a puck out of the air accidentally, the refs can just make up a horseshit penalty to even it out instead of waiting for something 30 seconds later that isn’t a penalty 99% of the time.

It's one game. We did actually get a point of it. We have Hanifin playing a top 4 d role for his first full season. Fleury is a brand new rookie and TVR is new to the team. Despite our insistence of amazing young defense being amongst the NHL's best this unit will require time to gel, as well as expectations tempered a bit there.

As for forward, we made the best moves we could make. I wouldn't change anything for Stepan. I wouldn't at this point trade a top 6 for Duchene. Our offense is middling, but will likely improve as the season runs along.

This team is still tracking upward to me, and I think we're still off to a better start than usual. No need to obsess over other players we didn't acquire, or lose faith in what we have. If Rask finds his confidence and Lindholm can find water from a boat we'll score more goals. Aho is going to get on course.

It is the finish they are missing right now. Aside from the OT there was one tic tac toe where Williams somehow missed a completely and totally empty net and the play where Pesce eventually got open on a 3 on 2 and sailed wide. Faulk hit a post in the 3rd.

Oh right, I already went through blaming this on Darling, why am I talking about this again.

The caps traded Johansson to the devils for a song.

Please stop. Trades like these are not available to Carolina. We are prohibited from making trades to acquire top-6 forwards by the CBA. Other teams can actively work to improve themselves via the trade market, but Carolina is barred.

I just did some math and figured out that the three shooters we sent out in the shootout have a combined *three* goals this season. And two of them are from our Norris-caliber shutdown defenseman. #fancystats

What worries me about this is that the longer it continues, the more evidence it is that we’re just fundamentally lacking in the skill department. It’s one thing to have a run of games where the bounces go the other way, but if those bounces don’t even out to 50/50 over the long haul, it’s evidence of something that will be very difficult and time consuming to fix.

Vegas and NJ are top-4 in the league right now for Goals Scored/GP. Arguably two of the least talented squads in the NHL. Meanwhile Edmonton is dead last and Pittsburgh is scoring at the same rate as the Canes.

It's frustrating but I want to give it another 10 games. Aho can't hit the net to save his life (despite generating a lot of chances) and the entire team seems to be mired in an "Over-Engineer the play" mindset. The only guys playing consistent, simple games are the 4th line and Skinner (who - surprise surprise has 7 goals).

I'd argue that the entire game against EDM was evidence to the contrary. There's no way the Canes should've won that game.

And this is where that subjectivity fails: it's easy to notice when the bounces don't go your way, but when they do, it's hard to discern.
