2009 for the avs looked real good with Duchene (3 OA now 2nd OA) ROR (33 OA now 4th OA) and Barrie (64 OA now 27 OA).

I thought it was interesting looking at the various re-drafts and for the most part thought they were pretty close to where I would slot the players.

It would be nice to see what criteria they use to do the re-drafts.

Gonna re-post this here:

Number of NHL games played by '09 draft picks per team:
(For the sake of simplicity, games are only counted for the team that ORIGINALLY drafted the player. So for example, Erixon is listed at 49 for CGY, and not 18 for NYR and 31 for CBJ)

1. COL: 630
2. LAK: 385
3. NYI: 363
4. WSH: 326
5. FLA: 299
6. TBL: 298
7. ATL/WPG: 283
8. NSH: 276
9. EDM: 230
10. MIN: 196
11. PHX: 183
12. BUF: 169
13. OTT: 167
14. CHI: 160
15. DAL: 136
16. CBJ: 134
17. NJD: 106
18. ANA: 105
19. NYR: 104
20. BOS: 102
21. TOR: 99
22. PIT: 56
23. MTL: 55
24. CGY: 49
25. PHI: 46
26. STL: 38
27. VAN: 31
28. DET: 27
29. CAR: 0
30. SJS: 0

09' draft is the draft that built what the Avs have today. Hopefully this years draft will be the same.

Wow on both ends of the spectrum here. So is the conclusion in 09 the Avs had the best draft class in the NHL?

Pretty safe to say, yes. Duchene and O'Reilly have already established themselves at top-line players, while Barrie and Elliott will be solid #3-5 D-men and have pretty long careers. Gus Young is an interesting name, I could see him carve out a niche as a bottom-pairing/depth guy, but maybe not for the Avs.

Another pretty interesting tidbit is that all 7 Islanders draft picks from that year have played at least 1 game in the NHL. Although that was more due to the fact that the Islanders stink, and Tavares, Cizikas and maybe de Haan will be the only guys to actually be NHL regulars.

Bottom line, no other team's '09 draft class will ever come close to surpassing the amount of NHL games played by our prospects from '09.

Looking at the list Barrie should be higher. I'd take him over Erixson, Ellis, and Moore... I'd put him in the 15-20 range. Elliott should be in the 25-30 range. ROR is probably 1 spot too high.

Regardless the Avs cleaned up in the 09 draft.

Other players that are too high/low

High:

Ryan Ellis
Chris Kreider
Marcus Kruger
John Moore
Tim Erixson
Jordan Schroeder
Zach Kassian

Low:

Marcus Johansson
Nick Leddy
Dimitry Kulikov
Brandon Pirri (going to be a very solid 2nd line player in the near future)
Cody Eakin (how is he not in the top 30?)
Marcus Foligno
Gabriel Bourque

Remember SammyJankis
Taking a look at drafts 2005 and later, we did, on the whole, a great job. What we did with the guys we drafted is a different story, but let's recap:

2005: Drafted Paul Stastny in the second round. Ranked 11th in the redraft.
2006: Drafted Chris Stewart at 18. 7 in the redraft.
2007: Drafted Kevin Shattenkirk at 14. 9 in the redraft. Even TJ Galiardi ended up 21 in the redraft.
2008: Traded away pick for Foote*
2009: Drafted Duchene, O'Reilly, and Barrie. Elliott right there too. All solid picks, especially for where we drafted them. No need to elaborate further.

*Given our record at drafting picks, I think this trade was a major mistake. While I understand the sentimentality of trading to get Foote back, we traded away a chance to draft Eberle, Del Zotto, etc. Maybe for the better, because we became bad enough to draft Duchene, Landeskog, and MacKinnon. But given our record in high rounds, it's tough to justify the trade.

Scouting has been our huge strength lately. I hope It continues, in cap-era you have to find those gems all the time.
