He pretty much has completely stopped trying. He gets gifted Ice time for being a veteran. Since his contract extension the guy hasn't played anything like he was before. Pretty disappointing. Went from a solid 4th liner to a guy that literally does jack ****.

I'm not sure how this comes as a surprise.

He's not having a great year, is he? He's played a couple of decent games here and there, but he doesn't seem as hungry as he did last season.

That extension doesn't look great at the moment, but guys have off years, too. It could be that he's playing hurt, too, who knows?

He needs to be better to earn that $2.5 million, though.

It's a bug in the game. When a character leader gains more character and leadership through more age and experience, sometimes they hit their character stat ceiling and it wraps over to zero.

Is it not? At least he looked good on the 4th line last year. He's completely invisible now

Just looking at contract/performance he was a very good value 4th liner, now he a his an overpaid 4th liner. You can forgive a few 100k in salary here and there when its a top 6 forward but as soon as you have that in you bottom 6 its a problem.

Still, the drop off has been disgusting

It's not really surprising. He's a 4th liner, always has been. And when 4th liners don't have impressive seasons they aren't really noteworthy.

But the guy running this team thinks 4th liners should be paid like 3rd liners and bottom pairing d-men like top 4 d-men.

I thought he's been ok the last few games... He's been good at puck retrieval for the 4th line forcheck - has quietly kept the puck alive for his teammates to continue zone time.

His line with Prust has been playing the opposition to a wash... which is awesome for a 4th line.

I don't think he's been a liability lately... I did think he started the season slow tho.

He's been missing from the fight card... but i don't share the hyperbolic opinion of the OP.

- does not want to risk concussions from playing too hard.
- playing too hard leads to heavy hitting, heavy hitting leads to opposition challenging, accepting challenges means more fights, more fights lead to risk of concussion

And contract term secured

He's been infected with Higgins'itis

Guy never has the puck and is always chasing, plus I am getting pretty sick of the constant complaints to the refs because he always a step behind.

He skates fast and finishes his checks most of the time, although he doesn't have the size or strength to intimidate anyone. He's not good defensively or offensively. Decent fourth liner paid like a good third liner.

Contract is just as bad as the day it was inked. Maybe worse since we have a bunch of young guys challenging for his spot getting benched or stuck in the minors (Virtanen, Kenins, Gaunce, Grenier).

It has more to do with his idiotic extension.

Guys who "leave their heart out on the ice" should not be signed to contracts of significant length, because it does not incentivise them to jeopardize their physical health to be a "tough guy".

When you know you can comfortably pocket over 2.5 million dollars a year for another 4 years, why would you risk getting knocked out of action with a major injury or concussion?

Shaping up as one of Jimbo's worst signings, right up there with Miller...was a heart and soul energy guy with Columbus and the Rangers, but not bringing much these days on the fourth line.....the $2.5m extension made zero sense at the time and looking even worse now....guys you want on the fourth line are hungry players on one-year deals, making the league minimum.

i hate dorsett but this reasoning is expressed backwards. his personal loss if hes injured is substantially reduced now that his contract is huge

on the other hand, he has no liability if people perceive him to be a worthless hack, because hes guaranteed that money

Dorsett would be fine if he was played for what he is. I guess Willie thinks our team is so soft our only guys who are at all interesting on the physical side need to be in more important situations?

It is not good reasoning, but then again, our team is soft and when a team is this soft and losing, this is when you really lose the fans. Which we have been- we have our own fans cheering for the Oilers for Christ sake on HF Board. It is a pathetic situation sometimes when you hate your GM so bad.
