Great signings once again, I love the initiative and approach Shanny has taken. He took some criticism for waiting a year before doing anything but I think it was a smart move. End result is us drafting 4th and a complete overhaul of Leafs management and staff which is something that was long overdue

i am curious. does this mean we're done coaching wise (ie: with the big club, because i know that Keefe will want to bring in his own assistants) because there is the Granato and the knobloch? knaughbloch? (McDavid's coach). inquiries.

Well we got DJ, who will probably run D, and Hiller will run PP and Brewer will be a coordinating assistant coach? I think you're right, we're done with big club, but there will be some more hires for Marlies.

And this is really good news, I'm excited for getting this guys, they seem like experts for part of game. Hopefully we'll see great improvement on our PP and also by our D.

DJ Smith = Dmen + PK
Hiller = Offence + PP

In his one season in Detroit, Hiller improved their mediocre PP and made them #2 in the NHL... Surprising if you look at their roster vs other teams.

If we're following this list then yes. Three vacancies under Babcock have now been filled with Smith, Hiller and Brewer on board.

Now we need the goalie coach. Hopefully we can get the guy who Bernier apparently likes.

Alright, we've got a pretty good staff. Smith is a defensive specialist, whereas Hiller is really good on offense. Exactly what we need from assistant coaches. Brewer is a trusted video coach, so hopefully that area improves also. Both of our video coaches were fired after all... Henning, who knows. But he's young, and he's kept even the oldest of Spurs looking pretty good, so that should be a good thing.

So now it's just a GM/Sr. VP, multiple scouts, head of pro scouting, VP and goalie coach? GM is probably coming down to someone like Futa. McCrimmon who knows... Probably just a head scout for the WHL because I doubt he will fill any of the other spots. Pro Scouting who knows. VP who knows. Goalie coach I think will be the LA guy.

When are we going to start hiring some scouts?

We also need a Director of Pro Scouting... And I wonder when they are going to say what Ben Simon becomes? I have a feeling it's assistant GM for the Marlies.

Shanahan continues to add the best and brightest to the organization.

Weren't some people on here complaining about how the Leafs should have hired Smith for the Marlies when Keefe was hired?

Well, Keefe still needs assistants... Any ideas?

And once again, when will the Maple Leafs tell us what happens with Ben Simon?

Nice to see the staff rounding out. I guess hiring Keefe didn't eliminate the chance of hiring Smith.

Enough off ice changes, time to take a bulldozer to the roster!

Actually Babcock hired his own assistants. It was his call.

Not sure if he'd be interested but I'd love to see them bring Spott back..

Honestly wasn't overly excited when they originally hired him but he did a great job with the Marlies...

Another coach from the OHL that would be of interest is Bob Boughner.

Fabian Joseph was an assistant/associate with the Moncton Wildcats the last eight seasons where he did an amazing job. If it weren't for the new GM bringing in his own guy , he'd be the head coach here in Moncton. He resigned this season and is looking for a new challenge but is rumoured to be Charlottetown's next HC. If that doesn't happen then I think he'd be a great hire as an assistant for the Marlies. He was a MapleLeaf draft choice in 1984 and has coached at many different levels and leagues from the IHL , CIS and CHL and National Teams. He also brilliant at developing young talent and is one of the classiest/respected guys in the QMJHL.

There's a reason Hanifin has been touted to go #3 all year, and only behind the 2 generational talents. Marner will be good, but a highly skilled winger is easier to acquire than a #1 franchise D-Man.

I never really understood this type of argument. You could easily just flip that around and argue that second pairing defencemen are easier to acquire than a point a game scoring winger.

I suppose we'll find out real soon what a point a game scoring winger goes for in the NHL. I doubt it will be as much as a #1 defenseman.

This is Post 96, as the thread title says. If you came to this post hoping to read some poignantly brilliant nugget of knowledge you will be sadly dissapointed.

Great hires. Feel good about this.

I'm really stoked to see all the positive changes happening within the Leafs this spring but
i really feel like Spott and Horachek got a raw deal.

Ben Simon and Gord Dineen truly deserve coaching positions with Marlies as well. I hope Keefe/Dubas will consider bringing them back - they were honest hard-working peeps for that team.

well Dineen wasn't fired per se, he was demoted and was told he could come back as an assistant if he doesn't it's because he doesn't want to be one i suppose.

Ben Simon is still around. It's just he was offered a position in management. The thing is, we don't know what. Dineen is also still around barring he wants to take the job here. So we have at least one, maybe two, positions to fill.

The only thing that makes sense, since he's not ready for one of the bigger jobs in the organization and isn't really the most ideal scout, is to be the assistant GM to Dubas for the Marlies. So pretty much how Dubas is the AGM for the Leafs and the GM for the Marlies, he'd be the same thing except the GM for the Marlies and the Leafs/Marlies rep for the ECHL development (since Orlando has a GM right now I believe). So essentially, he watches over whom to bring in from the ECHL for the AHL and watches over the development of the guys in the ECHL. We are becoming a 2 tier development system, why not get someone good looking out for the new tier. He was responsible for Froese, so he's already hit a homerun on his first hit. Let's see what else he can do. That would be ideal for me, besides buying up Orlando, moving them to Markham and having our entire 3 tier system in the GTA for close monitoring of our prospects and teams at all times.
