Look at every other team in the league and look at their #1C and #1D, you can include goaltending too.

How many teams do we trump in at least 2/3?

Let's use LAK as an example as we just played them.

#1C - Kopitar vs Bozak....Kopitar
#1D - Phaneuf vs Doughty...Doughty...
#1G - Bernier vs Quick...it has to be Quick, 2 cup rings, and he was a Conn Smythe winner once, although you can make a strong case for Bernier though.

Anyways it doesn't have to be as drawn out as I made it above but I don't see us being ahead of most teams in this regard. #1C, G, and D are what you need to win a cup.

I'll use a close comparable in Vancouver

C- Henrik vs Bozak- Henrik
D- Hamhuis vs Phaneuf I use Hamhuis because he is their best dman all the time while Edler and even Bieksa can have periods where they are really good and periods where they are really bad- equal
G- Miller vs Bernier- Miller right now, Bernier going forward

Our Leafs don't have a true #1C and #1D and have players in those position by default of simply being the best of their own temmates.

Leafs have needed a #1C since Sundin and a #1D since Salming.

Try to stay on topic guys.

Its not really worth comparing Bozak to Toews and Phaneuf to Keith as Leafs are essentially missing that #1C and #1D and will not compare favourably to other Cup competitive teams.

Take a team like Nashville built from the goalie out and with Rinne and Weber they have that true #1G and #1D and with that they are structurally sound and with that you can see why they're having success.

In the NHL you need a #1G #1D & #1C and LA has that in Quick, Doughty and Kopitar and that explains 2 Cups in the last 3 years.

Currently?
C- Kadri
D- Phaneuf
G- Bernier

Future?

C- Nylander
D- Rielly
G - Bernier

Bernier will be one of the best goalies in the world soon enough. He's elite.

William Nylander down the world has the potential to be a Giroux-like center. If he can hit that potential, with Nazem Kadri on line 2, we could have one of the best one-two punches down the middle.

Morgan Rielly, although going through a bit of a slump this season, has the potential to be a number one d-man. He'd be the perfect partner for Dion Phaneuf if one of them was right-handed. Alas, that isn't the case, but if we could get a strong RHD to be Rielly's partner long term (IE Keith-Seabrook) we could be very strong on D. (Which is why I, and many others, want to look at somehow getting Seth Jones).

So currently, nah, not good, but we have the pieces to be one of the best teams in the NHL. We just need to get Nonis out of the front office, and get a guy like Mark Hunter in there who knows how to build a stable, winning, organization.

#1C - bottom 10, maybe bottom 5
#1D - 15th-20th
#1G - top 10-12

It's hard to say, as there's variability year to year, especially for goaltenders. But that's roughly where Id put them.

Lots of comparable teams with better 1G or true 1C or 1D in the East but as soon as you go out west most of the stronger teams are comparable only to each other.

The difficulty with this type of comparison attempt is that often great players hit a another gear in the playoffs.

To me the Leafs are a lot like the Habs except that Price is Price.

Price>Berny
Subban>Phaneuf
Bozak>Galy

Nashville has 2/3 right now, great D and G, but lacking the #1C.

They are getting some great output from Ribeiro right now.

I'd take Galchenyuk over Bozak to be honest...Bernier to me is actually kind of a draw with Price. It's probaby the homer in me though.

Rinne and Lundqvist are 2 guys I can safely say are above Bernier, but I could argue guys like Price and not feel too bad about it.

Price may be the best goalie in the NHL though. Bozak over Galy today but not going forward. Is OK to be a homer lol!

At the risk of getting pummeled here, I'd say Price is an all-world goaltender, while Bernier is just a good goaltender. Agreed on Bozak- Galchenyuk. They were good with him and it'll pay off in the long run.

Kadri isn't our number one center. He's a number two center slotting behind a number three center in the first line center role.

Kadri has been our #1C at even strength all season. Bozak is more of a PP specialist playing more sheltered minutes.
