I actually like Romanuk. He seems like a pretty decent down to earth guy, easy going. Not a smart-@ss or anything, doesn't make dumb comments like Hughson and he doesn't criticize the teams on the ice. I don't know if he has a voice that can add excitement to the play or raise your anxiety though. Cole was the master of that. I'll be okay with Romanuk if they stick with him - but the way this is looking, it's going to be different commentators every week. Why is that?
Look at Jays games - we have the same guys, Martinez and Tabler (I think it's Tabler?)... this has been the formula for decades - you gain a familiarity with the crew when it's the same guys calling it. It's always, always been that way with all sports not just hockey.
But Rogers walks in, and every single night it's someone else. You don't get used to anything, which makes you feel detached from the broadcast because you will never be familiar with it. And we have a pop star interviewer as the LEAD HOST of hockey night in canada.. no, not a HOCKEY guy for a HOCKEY show... but a music and movie celebrity interviewer. But thats for another topic
Is this just a testing phase, to see who fits where? And then eventually the guys will settle in as the main commentators for Saturday games, or is this some kind of new bright idea they have and just rotate the guys anywhere they please? In the long run fans aren't going to like it.. but then again Rogers doesn't care what you like, right? That much is for sure.
