Their legacy in terms of how everyone (including outside of HF) remembers those teams? No. But we will be hearing in two years how those series were "the real cup final".

in the ao - crosby history the teams meet 4 times always in the second round... the winner always went on to win the cup. its 3-1 pens..., if anything it puts the "chocking" caps into perspective that they just lost to a good team. and if i read the overall perception from pens fans... they seem to agree that the caps were the hardest opponent for them.

this playoff rivalry is also a very crucial point in the ovechkin-crosby comparison, since the advantage sid has in terms of cups/playoff success comes from those cupruns... it could have been a lot closer, one mistake here, one bonce there and its 2-2.

On paper the team was worse but you need to realize that these playoffs everyone showed up. The years before there was always a couple players who weren't performing to their standards when they were needed most. That paired with the solid/breakout level of play our depth we acquired brought propelled the team over the top.

The Caps winning the cup this year enhanced the thought that the Penguins-Capitals has been the actual cup finals in the last 3 seasons (as in 2 best playoff teams playing each other), but no, it doesn't impact the Penguins at all.
