Whatever. If he gets it together its a steal. If not, Albany.

Rather moves like this than dumping a few years and millions onto Kris Russell.

We know Merrill is supposed to miss the beginning of the season - Gormley makes a decent fill-in player while he's out. Plus he's not an AHL veteran according to the development rule so he won't impact that in Albany at all. At the NHL level he's a body but he's shown some things at the AHL level, curious if he can get back to that level.

He is a living example of why you don't assume prospects will make it until they actually do. The true value here is for our young guys in Albany to be motivated to not become him. Think of how hard they'll work when they see this failure mailing it in next to them.

Shero is reaching Lou levels of bargain bin shopping right now.

Guy is 24 not 31. He's making 650k, not two million.

Zero risk, zero commitment, pure depth move. Can't say any of that about the Ryders and Havlats we had for a while.

Shero is reaching Lou levels of bargain bin shopping right now.

The difference is the guys Shero is "bargain" shopping are young, Lou kept going after guys who were on the wrong sign of 30, signed them for too much, and you knew what a person was at 30+ years old. Gormley could figure it out, will he? Probably not but there's more of a chance than signing vets who should've washed out of the league a few years before we brought them in.

I have zero issues here. What's the worst thing that happens? He ends up in Albany and replaces Gragnani? The best case scenario is he works on his skating and becomes an NHL dman. He's still really young and has tools. He was amazing in junior. It's hard to hate this, especially since Gormley probably knows it's his last shot.

His HF profile is funny.. He did well in juniors, followed it up with a good year in the ahl. They even wrote he was a 2 way D developing into a great offensive D. Then he gets traded and it goes to the darkside quickly. Career AHLer. He is young and it seems like he can be a good pp guy. They do love people fighting for roster spot.

Only positives can come from this signing.

Absolute worst: He never plays an NHL game, and he's let go after this season.

Average: He plays mainly in the AHL and plays well, and when there are injuries on the big club, he comes up and holds his own.

Absolute best: He gets his game together and is the #2LHD behind Greene we've been looking for.

The left side of our defense is so weak that I really cannot complain at all with this signing. These are the types of signings we need to capitalize on. I would imagine we bring a PTO for both the LD and RD in training camp and we will have plenty of competition.

Greene - Severson
Moore - Lovejoy
Merrill - Santini
Auvitu - Mozik
Gormley - Scarlett
Helgeson - Jacobs
PTO - PTO

We're likely going to have 10 guys competing for the bottom pairing and 7th defenseman. We should be able to find a competent third pairing from that.

I have low expectations and am fine with 1-yr.
Maybe he surprises.

Our defense in general is very weak on paper and needs to be upgraded by October.

I agree this is a reasonable move, but this has no bearing on signing Kris Russell or any other NHL defenseman. Russell may suck, but he's at least an NHLer. Gormley is a lottery ticket who would be lucky to turn into Russell one day.
