Lindy Ruff was the second worst coach this franchise has ever had behind John Maclean

The season last year was a total fluke for him, the team has won despite him numerous times.

I mentioned this yesterday. I'm not so sure Crosby would want to start over with a new coach at this stage of his career. So regarding Sullivan, who would win? Crosby or Dubas?

Why would it matter to him if there's a new coach? He's a complete veteran at this point. Probably wouldn't take much adjustment at all.

If Jack isn't healthy enough to take faceoffs he shouldn't be playing

Yeah but he hasn't taken one since his shoulder injury. Even when he was bad he'd still take them half the time

Yikes.

He hasn’t had one of his occasional hits either though he’s blocking shots like a little trooper.

Never like to see someone get fired. This was a bit overdue. Atleast Fitzgerald gave him a leash with all the injuries from this season and the goaltending shitting the bed. I got a feeling Lindy might get the last laugh if we don't turn shit around under Green or next season with whomever is behind the bench. There was still positives here under Ruff's tenure & growth as well but he isn't the guy to get them to the next level.

Anyway here was one of my favorite Lindy moments from a few seasons ago. Hope you guy get a chuckle out of it.

Yesterday's goal 3 against was symbolic of the bad execution and bad luck we've seen all season.

-Toffoli cross ice pass up the middle leading to a rush the other way. (Could insert Jack or Luke or someone else there for numerous other games this season)
-Defender caught a little flat footed due to transition and barely able to keep pace back to defend.
-Puck takes fortuitous bounce against and ends up right on another guys stick. This is right after defender bumbles puck
-Goalie goes for the wide angled bite, and takes himself excessively out of play (Daws, playing his best Vitek impression). This is after toffoli whiffed and incredibly somehow couldn't find the puck right in front of him.
-puck makes its way to guy in front of net, defender can't do anything, Marino is unable to box out or get a angle to stop the guy getting a easy one into net. Goalie abandoned net crease

.... Anaheim had that luck the game before either with the bounce and the wrapparound and Daws doing his Vitek just being late or slow or out of position just enough to have a gap for the goal. That happened after Bratt whizzed the puck around missing net. Could have held puck deep or just dumped it.

Shit mental decisions. system gets exposed, players weak on the puck. Players can't manage puck in key moments.

Not sure this will change with interim. One can hope there is a small spark, but I'm very discouraged about how this season played out.

The goal scene is like a number of others we saw at home. Just completely breakdowns at worst times, like Bahl falling over, Luke falling over, Marino can't box out.. Sieges or Smith can't wrap the puck simply for a breakout.

Firing Ruff maybe a spark, but it's probably going to be a very small one in this season. Hope players figure this shit out, I still feel a lot was on their shoulders to fix and they still f***ed up.

Travis green pulling the same strings I can't imagine will change much. We need a new senior voice and probably someone who can bring in some new ideas from the outside. Goalie coaching should be priority to fix as well.

Agreed but on the flip side green is auditioning for the job so he should do the total opposite of what they were doing in practice
It will be interesting to see what kind of changes he makes. Got to figure he's got some things in mind.

Calgary fans will pack their arena to make the "C of red" where literally all the fans have a red Flames jersey on (it looks amazing too) but when the team scores half of the building doesn't even pop out from their seat. It's the funniest thing because you would think all of these Canadian teams would have more lively crowds. I'm pretty sure the 6 other teams from up north don't do this nearly as much as Calgary does.

Yea, not what I meant. I know he's won cups with Crosby and Malkin. They need the next coach to be someone who can adapt their tactics to the roster and in general make adjustments on the fly. Someone who holds players accountable.

Sullivan checks off the credentials criteria, but does he check off the rest?

I doubt Lindy gets ANY "last laugh" here after the shit-show he oversaw.

Even if we struggle out of the gate next season (which IS possible with new coaching having to gel first with the team), Ruff would still have no room to pull a "Nelson" and go Ha-ha.

This is definitely recency bias.

I don't even think he was worse than Hynes, though he had much better rosters than Hynes did.

I also think Brent Sutter was worse, but it really didn't become evident until that Carolina playoff series in 09 and that was the last he ever coached here.

Herb Brooks was not good at all. He gets jocked because of the miracle on ice stuff. Yeah, he was a great college hockey coach. He was not at all a great NHL hockey coach.

Kevin Constantine also sucked and he's also apparently a really shitty person, which we didn't really find out until fairly recently. He was only here for like a minute though. Still not sure if he was just a placeholder the entire time for Pat Burns or what. I still think Lou had asked Burns in early 2002, but he may have said he'd start fresh the next year.

And maybe that was also one of the times Lou tried to hire Scott Bowman. The only other time it could have been was before he got hired by the Red Wings, but I think his contract was up in 2002 and he decided to retire after that last cup. Lou may have tried to lure him over then and Constantine was merely a placeholder for Bowman/Burns. Constantine was for all intents and purposes just an interim head coach, even though Lou specifically stated at the time that he was not being brought in as just an interim head coach and that he was permanent.

Now that I look up the dates, that's wrong, as Pat Burns was apparently hired the same day the Red Wings clinched that cup. No way Lou was talking to him while they were in the middle of a playoff/cup run.

I really went off a tangent there, but I think saying Ruff is the second worst head coach in Devils history is recency bias.

I'm still angry because this should have happened sooner and this didn't need to be a lost and wasted season.

Even with the injuries and the goaltending, they were always in striking distance, if not in control of making the playoffs.

A new voice and actual adjustments could have got them in or at least kept them close enough to pull off a goalie trade and fully get over the hump.

Ruff was not owed the opportunity to do it himself. He was not doing the job, so a move should have been made when there was enough season left to correct course.

I was afraid of this lol…the fact this guy had his first big break because of Markstrom is thick with irony
Markstrom and Demko made this guys entire career. Two franchise goaltenders. Without them he'd be a run of the mill AHL/CHL coach.

Literal Markstrom Merchant, Demko Demon.

Well, this is certainly some unexpected news to wake up to....

Like everyone else, I'll echo that no hard feelings against the man. He seemed a wonderful human and mentor.

That said, it was way past due. Time to evaluate and sell.

Tough thing to do, but has to be done for the good of the window.
