the thing about the point totals is that Nico has done most of his damage at even strength

since he came into the league, Nico is at 2.21 ES points/60 which is 56th best among forwards (min. 1000 minutes). This is better than:

S. Aho
L. Couture
J. Toews
M. Tkachuk
N. Backstrom
B. Wheeler
T. Seguin
A. Kopitar
G. Landeskog
M. Zibanejad

Just to name a few.

If he actually scored on the PP he would be making closer to $9 million right now.

6.5 for 7 years was a pipe dream. I honestly thought Nico could get more money. He's so underrated and has been our 1C since his rookie year. He's only going to get better too.

I agree and I prefer this over a bridge. Avoiding RFA drama and buying 3 years of UFA is a win for me even if it is a tiny bit expensive.

An overpayment based on the last two years? Eh maybe. I expect this to be a bargain by the time it’s over. So pumped to have him for so long.

Nico is how old again? 20?

So he'll be 26-27 that last two years of that contract.....I highly doubt he would not be living up to his contract by then still.

Normally, it's around that age where he's in the middle of his Prime, I think.

Why some believe the contract would be an overpayment by then is absurd.

What a deal. I am really surprised Nico was willing to do it now... figured he would try to get more after possibly having a breakout year. But this is great.
50 million dollars in your pocket and stop worrying about the negotiations and maybe you don’t need to give a cut to an agent either or who knows how this was handled. Sounds like Nico is a level headed dude.

WOW- I did not see this coming with the season having started. I’m late to the party but wanted to comment. I am absolutely thrilled by this deal. It will look extremely team-friendly in several years as salaries continue to rise. It is fantastic that Shero was able to avoid the bridge contract that so many RFAs signed late this summer. I have little doubt Nico would have commanded more than 7.25 AAV 3-4 years from now. Eliminating 3 years of UFA status is also a huge win for the Devils. I am very glad team and player got this done now, avoiding potential RFA drama that plagued so many teams recently.

This kind of contract also shows how highly the organization regards Nico and their confidence that he will continue to progress and live up to the AAV (which is still a high enough number that is nothing to sneeze at). Hopefully Hall is next...

On a side note, has anyone heard any whispers about what Nico’s injury is and when he may be back? The long gaps in the Devils schedule over the next two weeks are good timing for Nico to get well and hopefully not miss too many games.

That guy is also an idiot for saying the Siakam deal was bad. He’s a great power forward for the Raptors.

Plus everyone in the NBA gets stupid money anyway. NBA contracts aren't even the same stratosphere as NHL deals. $35 million for them is like $7 million for an NHL player.

This deal is by no means any kind of overpayment, in fact it's more than fair for a #1 OA who's had a nice start to his career.

lol too much term for your 20 year old first overall pick.

even if he does it for reactions idk how he gets paid for his hockey analysis. i would bet he never watched nico aside from the games the devils played the leafs

also:

To be fair that Henrique deal is a steal
