I was like "WTF am I watching?" and then I found out it was Japanese animation(anime as it was referred to)...and got hooked on it mainly 'cause of the serious stories instead of the usual silliness that I have normally associated cartoons with.

The hangup everyone in the US has with anime is that they associate the generally mediocre or very children's focused series with anime as a whole.

Anime is not necessarily a genre. Anime is animated television. You can have children's anime, horror, fantasy, sci-fi, romance, action, etc. anime. Saying "I don't like anime" is like saying "I don't like TV". That may be true, but it's more likely that you just don't like certain anime/tv genre.

Silent Voice is a terrific manga, I like it a lot.
Working in a library for kids, I read a lot of mangas to keept track of what they like.

For adult readers, "Bride stories" is probably the most beautiful I ever read : graphics are terrific.
The Promised Neverland is also a great story and the anime is just starting.

i actually tried to explain this to someone recently. urbandictionary has it (basically) as someone (usually a non-asian) who is into anime and into japanese culture, to caricaturistic levels. weebs dress a certain way, attend conventions, and are very out-there with their love for anime
