we don’t have any spots open, really. so a trade now doesn’t make sense to me rather than going into the season, letting all the new guys gel and seeing how it looks. obviously shero has a more informed perspective than me, and like i said i trust him

Spots might be filled but that doesn't mean those spots are filled by the optimal personnel. Spots were filled from 2013 to 16-17 but that doesn't mean the players filling them were good. Our LD is incredibly weak and we're short a legit top 6 forward

what? We still need a 2nd line wing and a top 4 LHD.

simmonds or boqvist on wing and potentially smith on d. the only way i see shero making a move is if he’s trading a veteran, established player out (i would think a guy like miles wood would be a candidate) and that would surprise me a bit

When I put it on there was some 5 piece drum band playing. Obviously it’s some local talent, and they’re not the issue. But this hoopla about pk is kinda over the top. I almost wanted the dancers from casino to come out and introduce pk. It just comes across as so forced. Like we’ve never had a star player or accomplished anything worthwhile.

Like when they jammed Hughes down our throats two weeks ago?

Simmonds should be nowhere near the top 6. Boqvist could maybe be that good but we don't even know if he'll make the team. I still think Gardiner and a top 6 wing through a trade is the best way to go

that may be true, but by that logic we don’t have an established, number one goalie either- that spot is also being filled. sometimes that’s what you do. a big part of getting optimal personnel is giving your prospects playing time so they can develop further

as i said a while ago, i think simmonds is going to surprise people for a variety of reasons i already explained elsewhere. i guess we’ll see

lol, you don't pay a guy $5 million to play on your third line. Simmonds is expected to be a healthy and productive top six winger.

Which is a yikes. He's not a top 6 player anymore. He's a bottom 6 PP specialist

When it's a one-year deal and you're way under the cap anyway you can't really manage playing time based on who makes what. Cory was a #2-platoon goalie at best last year and they have a lot more invested in him financially than Simmonds.

this is silly

Zajac makes $5.75 and will be on the "3rd" line

Simmonds should not play a ton at even strength

You think they're paying him $5 million to stand in front of the goalie on the powerplay? They would have signed Maroon for a million dollars to do that. People understand that the Simmonds deal contains risk, but also contains upside, right?

Zajac scored 46 points and was our second line center last year so I don't know what you're on about.

No, they are going to pay him to be JHs bully defender 3000 as well :sarcasm:

what I am "on about" is slotting guys in the lineup based upon how much money that they make is asinine.

We're not discussing how Hynes "slots guys into the lineup" we're discussing if Simmonds counts as a top six winger. I'm arguing that the fact that Simmonds was signed by the team, less than a month ago for $5 million is clear evidence that they see him as a top six winger. If you think that's wrong, please show me another forward that was signed to a contract that size to play on the 3rd or 4th line.

I know you're joking, but there's truth to that.

..which means they both have to be on the ice at the same time. ;)

Having a protector doesn't stop dirty plays from happening. They only retaliate when something happens

I really like our forwards but not defense and goalie needs work

Hopefully zacha , Smith, and Blackwood take the next step this year. I know smith didn’t play but we all know that he could have last year

I’d like to see zacha attached at the hip with Hughes to start... either playing center and Hughes on wing or Hughes playing center and zacha on wing. Also not a big fan of palms and hall on the same line.

Something like this

Hall Nico bratt
Zacha hughes palms
Coleman/Wood zajac Simmonds

I think they signed him thinking he could play in the top 6, but are more than ok with playing him in the bottom. If it was a 2-3 year deal maybe you would have a point. But this year they could have payed him 10 mil just to wash the socks. They wanted him this year and could pay him a lot to show what he had. I'm sure he had more term less money offers from other teams. What this deal does show for certain though, is the narrative of the owners being cheap is now dead.

Plus his ES role isn't the whole story. He may be a 2-3 tweener on ES but he plays PP and also adds the nasty/physical element we've needed for a long time from a real hockey player (re: not a Gabriel type).

Zacha-Hughes-Bratt would be one hell of a cerebral line. I don't really like the idea of Hughes having to cover for Palms either. Kyle is a defensive disaster.

If Zacha pulls up his pants and starts taking on a shooter's mentality, the sky is the limit for that line. A lot of playmaking ability between the 3 of them
