“If there was a lot of love for him, he’d have been signed by now,” one GM said

and then he gets signed (or agreement to sign later) today

it's possible other teams were interested but this is just bad timing at best, and I usually don't trash Peter King but this was just a bad coincidence

Well he did point out his GM-sourcing put Carr in NOLA.

Not going to make the Saints prime contenders, but could make them favorites for the division simply on the basis of okayness, and in the NFC, you really only need a few breaks to get to the Super Bowl. The worst thing that’s going to happen is the Saints end up in a full rebuild and draft a QB as early as next year.

Didn't realize that Jameis has a $15M cap hit and would be $11M dead cap charge if cut, I would guess that can gets kicked down the road for a restructure?

Death, taxes, and restructuring your contract with the Saints.

I don't believe Saints fans will notice anything different. I mean, Winston, Dalton, and Carr all are possessed by the same Mother Brain.

I really think the league has some mea culpa thing with the Carr family.....and they just pay Derek to make amends for hanging out David to dry.

With 100 M guaranteed, I think it would be very difficult to cut him after 1 year.

If they bomb this year, the coaching staff will be gone anyways, and then you swallow it the next year and begin anew, especially if they draft a QB, you ain’t paying him anyways.

Only really hurts if the player is removed from the roster. Means that the dead cap hit will hit either in the current year or over 2 seasons as a post June 1 cut. Winston, I doubt sticks around as a backup and won’t restructure. He likely gets a post June 1 designation so there would be a $7/$4 mil split on his dead cap charge.

With 100 M guaranteed, I think it would be very difficult to cut him after 1 year.
Is it fully guaranteed or not? What is the SB? Are there any terms of vesting? Like year 3 becomes fully guaranteed if he’s still a Saint by say the start of the league year in 2024? Details will determine how much guaranteed money we are talking about.

I’d be slightly surprised if there wasn’t voidable years.

From Rappaport's tweet, it is says that $60 mill as a signing bonus, with $10 mill of year 3 base salary that vests after year 1 is done, similar to the Raiders owing Carr all of 2023 base and $7.5 mill of 2024 base if they kept him on their roster 3 days after the Super Bowl.

So, of that $100 mill that they say in guarantees, not sure how they would arrive at that. I mean, his base salaries for 2023 and 2024 would have to be low, like under $10 mill. $60 SB + $20 Base for 2 years and $10 for year 3 that vests, would equal $90 mill.

Under that assumption, he'd cost them $45 mill per over 2 years at least.... That seems high. But, if his base salary is closer to $5 mill per then it would be $40 mill per and a manageable $20 mill cap hit per for 2023 and 2024. But, with $40 mill of potential dead cap due to $30 mill in SB and $10 mill of year 3 base that vests if he's not on the 2025 roster.

That structure makes more sense than what was tweeted out earlier at $60 mill signing bonus.

So he gets $28.5 mill as a SB. With $1.5 mill base for 2023. Cash of $30 mill.
2024 is base salary of $30 mill.
2025 $10 mill vests after year 1. So he’s basically due $70 mill cash after 2 years.

So he’s getting under the $123 mill
That he signed with the raiders for in 2022.

Carr takes a $3 mill cut from the $32.9 mill he was due this year. Another $2 mill or so in 2024 if you factor in his $10 mill that vests in year 3.

If he returns in 2025 expect another restructure of his deal to bring his base down. Don’t see them taking a $45.7 mill charge for him. Probably convert like half his base into a bonus or something.

That always happens because the agents want to look good and that’s when they look the best, and the insiders want to keep their sources happy and give them some shine.

I’m sure that brother David on nfl network will say it’s not about the money since his last deal averages over $41 mill per over 3 years where’s this is $37.5 mill over 4 years.
