First overall pick tend to have the "chance" to play on terrible team, there exception outthere like Lafleur but the Isles before Potvin record looked like this:
Record: 12-60-6 (30 points), Finished 8th in NHL East Division (Schedule and Results)

Its calder trophy season they were much better but still a Record: 19-41-18 (56 points), team that Potvin a rookie defenceman lead in scoring, he won the Norris before Bossy arrived there.

I mean:
To add to this, the Isles gave up exactly 100 less goals in their 2nd season than their first. That's the type of impact Potvin had as a rookie.

This is what happens when you replace 72 games of Bill Mikkelson and his -53 for rookie Potvin.

Bill BTW went to the next expansion team of Washington and was -82 in 59 games for them in 74-75.

Also Potvin led the NYI in scoring his first 4 seasons as well he was truly one of the all time greats.

During the 1984 series against Washington, Potvin's father was severely sick and on the verge of dying (he died Apr 16, three days after the game posted above in the thread).

This probably explains his oddly unproductive 1984 playoffs after he appeared to still be in prime form during the 83-84 regular season.
