With the 2013-14 NHL regular season drawing to a close, it is time to hand out some hardware. For the New Jersey Devils, it was another good season for many prospects. From Albany's rookie class spearheading the team's postseason run, to the success of many collegiate players, as well as Graham Black's stellar year, and the emergence of Miles Wood.

Hardest Worker: Graham Black, C, Swift Current Broncos (WHL)

For years, Black has dealt with Graves disease, a rare autoimmune disease that has hampered his development throughout his career. Even with this illness, he was able to perform at a high level on both ends of the ice.… read more

So Miles Wood will definitely be playing for BC in 14/15? Because I think there were some articles written that mentioned he wouldn't be there until 2015.

It looks like he will play next year in BC. Prep school players, if I read correctly, have the option to accelerate to college in their final year. Even if he stays at the prep level, he will get the chance to build upon his impressive junior season.

Good reading. I hope the improvement continues for all of them.

Speaking of Albany's postseason run :

Very good write-up as usual John.

Question - do you feel based on how sick our depth our prospects are on defense will elevate our ranking? I think it's shortsighted for HF to not take this into account and put us on the bottom based on our forwards.

I will stand by my belief that the Devils and Islanders have the two best defensive prospects amongst the NHL. Five or six of them could easily make the NHL in the next year or two. At least four of them are likely to play top-four minutes. But that alone can carry them so far. Outside of Boucher and Matteau, who are both likely to have NHL jobs, the rest of the forwards are unknowns until they prove themselves at the pros. New Jersey might have the best two steals in Miles Wood and Myles Bell from last summer, but they both have to back up their recent play (Wood in college and Bell if he signs in the AHL). Personally, I believe Blake Coleman took that next step and wll be in the pros. There has also been a severe lack of talented forwards for quite some time. This is why Detroit has made the playoffs every year. They have the best scouting team in hockey that can find talent in all the nooks and crannies wherever they are positioned. That lack of talent up front is what will keep the Devils system in the bottom tier.

On a side note, I do not like how they have handled the right wing position. The past few years they have addressed it through free agency or shifting others to the right. It has worked, but for how much longer since most of the current ones are our veterans (Jagr, Ryder, Zubrus can play all three, Bernier). I hope to see two natural right wingers taken in this upcoming draft.

You and me both but *SOME* people believe in the Best-Player-Available-No-Matter-What mantra to go along with the Never-draft-for-need motto. :sarcasm:

Devils NEED forwards to draft. The Best ones that are left at #30 and #42, IMO. After that, they can select whatever.

I'm bullish but not convinced by the d-men.
Merrill has his flaws, Gelinas has his flaws, Larsson has his flaws, Santini, Severson...etc. I don't see a Trouba, Carlson, Shattenkirk like candidate in the pool, yet.

If Gelinas can clean up some decision making he could be a stud. Merrill could. Larsson may not have the mobility of a top pair, but he does a lot of little things well and can pass at an elite level. blah blah blah. It's still a bit TBD for me with good upside. I wouldn't mind a DeAngelo being drafter if necessary. I think you get BPA and trade assets where applicable.

Yep. Just look at how Kulikov has turned into an elite player since Pete left Florida. Larsson would have a Norris by now without that abusive idiot coach holding him back. :sarcasm:

I do not believe Pete is as bad with prospects as everyone makes him out to be. We can agree his line-ups are questionable at times and he has a tendency to overlook certain players when they are outplaying others, notably the veterans. Still, he never shied away from playing Merrill in 2014 or trying to keep Gelinas in the line-up even as a powerplay specialist. He also gave Boucher top-six minutes, and that does not happen often with rookie prospects.

I forgot who said it yesterday, but I agree with their mindset for next season. The team's mentality has to be that no one's job is guaranteed. The best players play. Young and/or old. Hot streaks. Lady Luck. Literally on fire. If you are not getting it done, someone else will take your spot. And there are a few youngins' that could earn an NHL job at training camp.

he took Gelinas out of the lineup plenty for guys like Harrold or Volchenkov lol hell, he even played him at FORWARD some of the games.

Because he can't play defense....Kind of a prerequisite for the position dontcha think?

A defenseman that can't play defense who still managed to get in 60 games...Pete's fault.

Gelinas came into the league as a defenseman....

I seriously doubt he can't play defense, Jim.

Pete just PREFERS to use his washed-up VETS over younger players. That's all it is and ever will be the case with him.

This is why I'm praying that either Volch or Sal(or both) get bought out because the only way you'll get young players like Gelinas and Larsson out there(since they're not Pete's Pet like Merrill is apparently) is to take away Pete's "toys" from him.

I just feel like sometimes the Devils are more concerned with preventing goals rather than winning hockey games.

Do you watch the game with a blind fold on?

He has been one of worse defensemen I've seen in the lineup in the last 10 years....Urbom's first 8 game stint under Maclean might have been the only worse defense I've seen from a Devil player in recent memory.

Jim Fahey actually played better defense...Yeah, who?

Goals from D-men are a bonus...They are like the 20 dollars you find in a coat pocket and if they come at the "COST" of defense, they are completely useless.
