So a genie comes up to you and gives you a choice:

You can guarantee your team at least 1 Stanley cup win in the next 5 years - but if you take the deal, it means your most hated rival team will win at least 5 of the next 10 cups.

Deal or no deal?

For the sake of maintaining the "surprise" factor that makes winning a cup fun, imagine that the deal also includes a clause that as soon as you make the deal, your memory will be wiped. So whenever your team wins the cup, it'll be a surprise, and it won't be expected, and so you'll be able to enjoy the experience fully.

Finally - keep in mind the only guarantees are at least 1 cup in 5 years, and 5 in 10. If you don't take the deal, anything can still happen. If you do take the deal, your team can win more than 1 in 5, and your most hated team can win more than 5 in 10 - those are just the minimum guarantees.

For fun - try and post your favorite team/most hated rival.

Well if we won a cup that means we are likely constantly contending. In order for the Flames to win 5 cups, they would probably be smoking us every year. There was a massive swing of emotions between the two fanbases this year, don't think I'd want to be on the wrong end of that 5/6 times in the near future.

It seems like it would be stressful to win a cup, then not only have the Flames in 5 cups but also go through us what I assume is the majority of the time. If we won our cup and then regressed to being trash I'd probably just take the cup and not care, but if we stayed good and kept getting owned that would add some extra pain. Not sure how to vote TBH.

This is a "be careful what you wish for" scenario.

Your 1 Cup is going to get absolutely shat on for the rest of your life because it's against a background of your biggest rival mopping the floor with you every year. It will feel good in the short term, and then feel less and less relevant as time goes on.

Real life example: the 1980s Calgary Flames are regarded as one of the most underperforming teams ever, because they had to go through the 1980s Oilers in their own division. Even with a guaranteed Cup on the table, I seriously doubt that Flames fans would want to go through a 1980s reboot.

Who wouldn’t say yes to this? If someone hates their rival more than they support their own team, I’d wager a guess they aren’t actually a great hockey fan.

Umm pretty easy for you to say. Do the Stars even have a rival???

I am being serious too do the Stars even have rival?

The answer is very easy for teams like Arizona / Dallas / Columbus and some others that don't even have true rivals. Should also be pretty easy for teams with rivals several states/providences away from each other.

I do feel like the Islanders / Rangers rivalry is a little different with the teams playing less than 20 miles from each other. Having friends, coworkers, neighbors, and family members potentially rooting for opposing teams. Walk down the street and see Rangers or Islanders jerseys or shirts being worn. Going into bars and seeing opposing team's jerseys or flags hanging up. Others rooting at the bar for the opposing team. All social media blowing up depending on which team is doing better at the time. I would say in my area it's 70% - 30% Rangers to islanders and I would sacrifice the 1 win for not living with the Rangers winning 5 cups in the next 10 years. It's insane how many Ranger fans came out of the woodwork after their successful season this year.

If my team was in another country or other states or areas I would 100% take the 1 championship. I am a huge Giants fan I would take 1 win for 5 Dallas wins. For the hockey situation, I don't have that luxury though.

Deal. Seeing teams you hate win is only miserable when your team is awful at the same time. If you get to win too, it's easier to swallow

I don't hate any team enough for their success to be a problem for me. There's already a never ending stream of hate coming at Leafs fans. What difference does it make if Boston or Montreal win a couple of Cups? Toronto winning one year would dampen most of the current insults and jokes being flung our way. More than enough to offset watching a rival be a dynasty.

Florida fan. I'll take the guaranteed cup, even if I have to suffer through my most hated team winning 5. Would not be crazy if Tampa did that anyway. And 1 cup after the Panthers overall miserable existence in the league would be worth it.

The Stars don’t, but my teams in other sports do. Still a very easy decision there too. Give me the one moment of joy.

Easy yes for Columbus. I don’t even know who our biggest rival is nowadays

Voted "no" because I think my team will win won on its own merits within the next 6-10 years so no need to give 5 guaranteed to any of our most hated rivals.
Montreal will win a cup with what core? Wright, Caufield? Meh
