Prospect Info: David Musil vs. Oscar Klefbom

Okay I know I will be subject to much hate (initially) for this... but in watching OKC a bit more lately and looking at their trajectories... I don't know that there is a whole separating these two right now... how you view that (Klefbom a lesser prospect than we think or Musil a better one) is up to you but I think it is worth discussing

Musil- 6'4, 203
Klefbom- 6'3, 201

Musil- April 09 1993
Klefbom- July 20 1993

Musil- 36 GP, 1-6-7, -9
Klefbom- 39 GP, 0-6-6, -11

-What advantages does Klefbom hold over Musil?
-Why are those advantages not helping him perform better today?
-What are Musil's weaknesses?
-Why are those weaknesses still letting him perform at the same level today?

For me Klefbom is the better skater and thinker... but he has missed so much time at key points... I do not think his future is as bright as once expected... mean while Musil has refined his game... he is what he is... a simple, slower, mean, crease clearer who narrows guys off to the wall like clockwork

Klefbom is better but I wouldn't hesitate to trade either of them.

haven't got a clue. I can't bring myself to be excited about any Oilers' prospect because I have been burned too many times. Until I see with my eyes that they can play with the big boys, because they are actually playing and playing well, with the big boys (ie. Marincin) I can't expect any of them to be players.

I suspect Klefbom will be a solid player, but I doubt he will be as good as he was sold to us. And Musil? Lower ceiling, lower expectations. If he becomes a contributing player, that would probably be a bonus.

36 games after being out for a year and doing as well as someone who hasn't missed much.

I think Klefbom is one of those projects you see through and have time for. It is low risk / high reward imo.

I think he'll power a head of Musil with another year of AHL experience. I don't think 36 games is enough to work off both rust and developmental issues that arise after taking a year off. Give him another year in the AHL and I think it'll be another Marincin situation where he comes to the NHL and does well. There is no reason he can't get back to where he was and better. He is probably a lot closer to form pre-injury. He has been trending upwards for awhile.

Oilers need to handle this properly and let him develop for a respectable amount of time. I hope Marincin can be the template on how proper development is achieved. I really hope they don't bring Klefbom in and let him get some AHL experience (hopefully with some playoffs as well).

Klefbom is definitely the better prospect but his development has been hampered by injuries. He has a higher top end even based on skating and hockey smarts even if Musil may be using the tools he has better right now.

Basically, this.

They both were projects. Musil's is progressing at a steady pace, Klefbom has dealt with injuries.

I think both of these players could benefit from another year in the AHL while we bring Nurse and Ekblad (if all goes well) as they would not benefit from another year in the CHL IMO.

I think one of these guys possibly will be moved too many young players Ekblad(if all goes well), Nurse, J.Schultz, Marincin, Klefbom, Musil. Need vets on the back end.

I'm sorry for going off topic but, does anyone how Gernat is doing in his development ?

Klefbom is a much better prospect. His game has come along way since September. By the end of the season he will be back as the #1 D prospect. Even coach Nelson said he's a completely different player he was in sept. Klefbom is a much better skater, has better hockey sense and is a better puck mover.

Klefbom has Edler like ceiling, where musil will be a reliable bottom pairing guy

^ Gernat come along nicely in the AHL and started putting up points recently. He is way more raw than marincin, and is 2 years away, but coming along. Most rookie AHL D falter big time once playing in the AHL, so it's great to see Gernat survive

Thanks! Good to here, I always liked him and thought he was a great value for a 3rd round pick :)

Edit: Any NHL upside?

Jonathan willis (big follower of okc) has good things to say about him to. He was a 5th rounder too, so a really good pick thus far

I think he has NHL upside as a Cody franson type pp specialist playing sheltered minutes.

But then again I thought marincin was 2 seasons away last season before being slowly brought into the league  Hopefully Gernat follows the same path, as both play similar games, and are pretty similar prospects

No way you trade him. Klefbom's value couldn't possibly be any lower right now.

Klefbom's skating is a lot better and he's got a scary slap shot but never gets in position to use it.

I think we've got a pretty crappy group of forwards in the AHL right now.

Hamilton and Pitilick have had flashes of awesomeness, but they've had a hard time staying healthy.

Horak and Lander are pretty good producers in the AHL, but they don't have the skills to dominate games. I'm convinced we'd get a lot more out of our d-men if they had some flashy forwards to pass the puck up to.

Gernat is a weak skater. In every other way he is a NHL player. he is smart, big, great passer. However, I don't see him in the NHL. Just needs to much work on his skating.

ps. Every one is pretty on the ball with this. Klef is a much better prospect. Has come along slow this year, but is coming of a major injury. He has top pairing upside. Musil will be a 6/7 type guy.

I'm glad this poll is as lopsided as it is. Klefbom is a special player, no offense to Musil.

I would still like to call up Klefbom and see what he can do here. I wouldn't be surprised if he did better in the NHL than in the AHL.

Musil is a joke jag along the lines of Plante. We passed on a guy like boone jenner if i recall to draft our scouts kid. Klefbom is a huge dissapointment, whereas others of his time and skill set are flourishing in the nhl he gets hurt each year and or does little. I had him projected to come up by mid year and be like marincin for us, boy was i wrong.

The penner trade was a fleecing alright....

When will this board learn that trading players for draft picks only guarantees perpetual rebuild.
Trading Penner was a tragedy for the franchise.
Klefbon is Plante.
Lowe must be fired.

This I don't get. Outside of Brodin who got into a perfect situation in Minnesota and Dougie Hamilton all the other first round D-men of that draft are fringe NHLers at best as of now. Even Adam Larsson has yet to fully establish himself as an NHLer. D-men takes time. Klefbom came off a lost season. He'll be fine.

I was pissed when they drafted Musil over Jenner. Even more now when you see the type of player Jenner has become for Columbus.

The poll should be 54-0, I can't believe people are even voting tie. David Musil was a nepotism pick. Even if Franky was out of the room when they were discussing him, you can't possibly think that his friends on the scouting staff are going to be bashing him. Could've had Gibson or Jenner.

How did Penner do in LA again?

And which 2011 D are flourishing? This is a pretty unintelligent post

Musil is a far better skater and passer than most give him credit for.

He has top4 shutdown potential.

He looked miles better than Klefbom earlier in the season. Klefbom has improved, but Musil hasn't slowed down.

Is that why he couldn't even crack the AHL roster over a guy who'd been inactive for 10 months due to injury?

Not that early in the season.

I'm talking about when Klefbom was playing so poorly that he was being healthy scratched and being replaced by Smac on defense and Musil was playing like hands down the best player on the team.
