What's the status on him? I haven't read any news about him for many weeks.

It really is ****ed up that a 26 year old have such a poor back? Will he even be ready for next season, will he have a "Z-back", that acts up from time to time, from here on going forward?

Why don't he just get under the knife and get it fixed? Is it not do-able?

he doesn't really have a firm diagnosis. can't go under the knife unless you know what's wrong and there is a surgical treatment

Back surgery is nasty business and a last resort.

For a pro athlete it likely means retirement.

Not true, but it means a definite decrease in performance. Bertuzzi had back surgery during the 2006-2007 season.

Sad story... Meanwhile Cleary could get shot on the ice and will be playing the next shift. I think he is terrible but he def has heart. He will make Colorado's bottom 6 better next season hopefully

Honestly I don't even have hope for him returning next season. His situation is ridiculous and I really wish we'd get some definitive answers.

Its very discouraging to hear that what ails Darren is back problems. Yes it is nasty business but many athletes have come back strong after treatment or surgery. Look at Jason Spezza, he had back surgery this season and he might be playing soon in the playoffs. It all depends on what the problem is. I know from experience given I've had two herniated discs repaired and quite frankly it changed my life. Mind you I'm not a hockey player but modern medicine goes a long way today. Too bad what they do today in the operating room wasn't around for Bobby Orr. Get well Darren...we all miss you.

This. His injury situation has always been very vague, mysterious and constantly in flux. How about some better reporting or answers from management?

this is reasonable reporting, per khan. to me, it means that there is no surgical issue (structural = potentially surgical). also, reading between the lines, it sounds like they do not have a good explanation for the pain he is sensing, which means he has not been diagnosed properly.

Helm saw another specialist this week.

“He confirmed what a few other doctors said, that there's nothing really structurally wrong with it,'' Helm said. “I can kind of start pushing things and nothing's going to happen, not any big problems. If I go too hard, too fast, things will get a little messy, but if I keep a good, steady pace and be smart about it I shouldn't have any problems.''

Take the shot/pills and get out there. Contract is guaranteed and there's always LTIR.

Why? What would be the point of that?

Yeah I never got the reasoning behind the "they should have traded him" talk (even though I've only heard it one or two times). It's not like he's some highly valuable top 6 center that would bring in a great haul on the trade market, he's a bottom sixer energy guy with limited to no offensive upside, his value to the Wings exceeds his trade value by a large margin.

I do agree with this. Although I remember hearing/reading somewhere that one player other teams wanted in a trade with us that Holland wouldn't give up was Helm.

I'd say MAYBE he's ready by training camp. And that's a hard maybe. It really sucks; he makes our team 20% better just by himself.

He was mentioned in 95% of any trade thread involving the Red Wings but it's been highly known Helm is on the untouchable list. Well, given he's 26 and has already sat out a [half] season due to a back problem, I wouldn't have a problem trading him away if someone wants to overpay and the right piece comes back.

Would that of even been possible. Wouldn't he have to pass a physical.
That's a good question, to which I don't know the answer. But I think you are correct in that line of thinking.
