Haula has played on and been a key contributor for playoff teams every year of his career and is currently playing at a +10 clip but he's the problem?

Seems like Bratt and Hughes were a lot less of a defensive liability when he was on the ice with them.

Someone has to be the adult.

Or maybe having a certain winger on the ice when you're in your own end is like being shorthanded.
Meh. I know you think Bratt won’t play defense but the reality is all three were off last night in my view. Bratt didn’t look any worse than the other two.

I’m already mentally preparing for it, it’s gonna be horrible if they do lose. Team is 2nd in the league and can’t get the benefit of the doubt to win because of a 3 game losing skid.
I’ll be there, first game of the season. With that, I’m expecting garbage on the ice, shutout 4-0 lol.

Can't speak for anyone else but my concern is more due to the team's play as opposed to the wins and losses.

During this stretch, the wins against the Flyers and Chicago were as troubling as the losses. Ups and downs are a given but when teams continue taking shortcuts without correction it isn't good.
Meh, in the bad stretch, I didn’t like the Philly and Isles games, but other than that I thought they were fine in the 2 Rangers games, the one last night, the Chicago one, and I’d even throw the Nashville game in there. They played well enough to win in all those games.

They’re not gonna steamroll teams all year, that pace isn’t sustainable even for true Cup contenders and teams are gonna adjust.

Only game the Devils really played poorly in is the Islanders one and even there they got chances, just gave up way too many. Siegenthaler is definitely hurt or is at least playing significantly worse than he was at the beginning of the season. Devils were still doing their thing for a lot of this game, just couldn't find the open man in the offensive zone.

Dallas is good.

And you know, I would've signed up for that.....PRIOR TO THE SEASON STARTING.

But now that the Devils are in THIS position, I don't want to be in a situation where missing the playoffs is a possibility.

Sorry but the Devils have raised the bar here and if the end up missing after the start they got, I will be very disappointed to say the least.
you have raised your own expectations

We are truly through the looking glass when @JimEIV and @guitarguyvic are the optimists telling everyone else to calm down with the negativity.

Never thought I'd see the day.
All I ever asked for was legitimate proof of improvement on the ice (as opposed to on paper or in theory based on subjective analytics). I have no problem changing my opinion when proven wrong. I guess that’s a rare thing to see these days? :dunno:

No criticism intended from me, I'm merely remarking on the amusing role reversal that is evident in the last few pages of this thread.

We always need a few contrarians to counter the group think.

It was an off night. Hischier couldn’t win a draw and the whole line couldn’t connect on passes and they spent way too much time playing in their own zone. Maybe the task of slowing Robertson Hintz and Pavelski got to them?
The way last night that the last second goal developed out of nowhere, with a lost puck battle and a fast pass to a wide open (and I do mean WIDE open shooter here in the slot 20 feet out - who the hell blew that coverage?) and a fast shot, rebound (actually post here) to the goalies feet and then tap in . . . totally reminded me of the Nashville goal with 6 seconds left to tie that game two weeks ago. Spooky how similar those plays are. Although this came off a faceoff. Was there a bad icing involved at the end of the Nashville game too?

But yes it was an off night for us energy wise. We are showing some mental tiredness too and I also think it’s better for a team’s focus to be on a road trip at this time of year than to be at home during the holidays with all their distractions.

to this day, when i’m really really pissed about something, i say to myself “now calm down diddly diddly diddly diddly, they did their best shodilly iddly iddly diddly, gotta be nice, hostility diddly diddly diddly.”

I wish I knew someone in my life that I could pull the "Lisa Simpson, Springfield's answer to a question no one asked" line on. There is no better comeback than that.

We won't go .500 though

We're gonna lose almost every game, the CBJ will even be finishing ahead of us.
in this case i want to state, that i am ok with not winning the draft lottery. the devils don't need bedard. they are setup fine with fantilli or carlsson.

Schmid has benefited from a lot of post hits this year. I feel like about 1-1.5 per game

But even if say 4 of those post hits turn into goals (cause not all of them would), he'd still have a .917% on the season and not a .939%. And that's still pretty good.

He's been the biggest surprise of this season for me.

He needs one ass beating in net before you can really justify sending him down.
well you just look at the goalies. so it was schmid, vv or dark woody.

so we have to change up and trade bratt for whatever we can get. he will sign anyway with the rangers asap. so better get over it now.

do you prefer the gloom talk like this? really?

Sitting back and pointing at the standings EVERYTIME *is* using the standings as a crutch.

And what I "prefer" is for some people to not be jerks.

Also, what I "prefer" is for the Devils to remove their heads out of their collective asses and start winning in the stat that matters (instead of Analytics) : The Final Score.

And then after we lose to the Flyers, you can copy and paste this and just change the record :

We're 21-7-2

Will people knock it off?

I mean...how long do we keep looking at the standings as a crutch before realizing the Devils are in deep shit?
i think i am now team trade bratt. he isn't performing. he hasn't scored. he must be the issue. if we get rid of him everything will get better.

trade bratt, because we are in deep shit.

changing the measuring stick based on positive results isn't fair.

if you work for a company, which gives you yearly targets and mid year you already overperformed them, would accept, if the bench mark for those goals are set higher for you and you will most likely fail to reach them?

That's what companies do though 😭

Our bottom 6 has been useless garbage since Bastian went down, that's your reason why. Even when those guys weren't going in games, our bottom 6 was picking the slack tremendously. It hasn't happened recently because of it.
our bottom 6 has basically become a bottom 3.

if i have any beef with the coaching, it is going away from sending out 4 lines consistently. players start to pace themselves, when they expect to be back on the ice sooner and you won't be able to keep the rhythm as high as intended.

I'm guessing this is sarcasm. But would you care to guess which forward didn't fill the shooting lane on what proved to be the game-winning goal last night?

The only problem is that all of the other NHL teams have professional scouts, too.

Generally speaking, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to nitpick the defensive play of guys who score at better than a point per game pace. I don't think Bratt's defensive liabilities outweigh his offensive contributions.

The issue with the game tying goal is not Bratt's average defensive awareness. It's the fact that as a team they decided to try to make a play in their own zone with a few seconds left on the clock instead of just trying to protect the puck until the clock ran out.
