So it looks like Franson is the odd man out next year. As much as I like his size and he is great on the PP. he just makes way to many expenses and personally Gardiner seems to have way more upside. So the question becomes do we look at our kids with the Marlies to find a right handed stay at home-Granberg or do we try to sign a FA or trade for that position?

As terrible as Ranger was at the beginning of this year he is starting to play a lot better (not playing in the NHL for 4 yrs would be tough on anybody) and I don't mind having him as a seventh.

Phaneuf Gunnarson
Gardiner Gleason
Reilly Granberg

Ranger

Thoughts?

I disliked him most of the season but the last few games he looked solid so I will give him the rest of the season (and playoffs...) to redeem himself before casting judgement.

I doubt he can justify being on the team next year for what he will want but I wouldn't count him out just yet.

Dream world: Nashville can't afford Shea Weber and his massive signing bonus. We miraculously trade Phaneuf+Gardiner+1st and land Weber.

Rielly-Weber
Gunnarsson-Granberg/Percy/Franson
Gleason-Granberg/Percy/Franson

I'd be very excited if Rielly took a big step forward next year and we rolled:

Rielly - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Gunnarson (Not sure if either can play as a RHD, I think Gardiner can)
XXXX - XXXX

Brennan, Gleason, Percy, Granberg, Finn, FA/trade to fill the bottom pairing

Could definitely see Rielly taking a big step next year after adjusting to his first year in the NHL. Heck you can tell he's been better the 2nd half of the season so far. Need Rielly to take those next steps to kinda glue this defence together.

Rielly-Phaneuf (Offensive+Speed and Offensive)
Gunnerson-Gardiner (TWD and Offensive)
Gleason-Franson (Defensive and Offensive)

Ranger as 7th

If Franson asks for too much, find a Dman that can play the right side and have Gleason paired with him to ensure things go smoothly and to cover said player's defensive shortcomings if any.

Gunner-Granberg is my dream 3rd pair...

I love Rielly and Gardiner so much though, and i also really like Gleason and Phaneuf... Dont know if you can make two good pairs out of Gleason Phaneuf Rielly and Gardiner, especially with them all being leftys.

First, the Leafs should trade Gardiner, Granberg, Clarkson, a 1st (2014), and a 2nd (2016) to Buffalo for Myers, Stewart, and Leino. Then trade Reimer, Franson, and another 1st (2015) to Long Island for Pulock. D-core looks like this next season...

I think we're going to see one of Gardiner or Rielly on the top pairing rather than going for Giordano. The two didn't play together in Calgary and Dion was never a great fit with J-Bo either. What the LA game told us is that Phaneuf needs a strong PMD in order to thrive. Aucoin did that, and Gardiner/ Rielly could do the same.

Dion is a top pairing TWD and is seems to be much better suited to be the defensive anchor that has an effective shot. We're going to be seeing Gardiner and Rielly as our PMDs with Franson traded.

I think at this point Rielly is ahead of Gardiner.

Gunnarsson - Phaneuf
Gleason - Rielly
Gardiner - Granberg

Or something.. would love to upgrade on Gunnarsson via trade/ufa, potentially moving Gardiner in that deal. Gunnarsson would be better on a 2nd/3rd pairing imo. Brennan could fill as a #6 or #7, assuming Gardiner is dealt.

Franson/Gunnarson and Gardiner are expendable with the right upgrades. Our D needs to be tougher to play against. I agree that Franson should be the first to go.

It'd be his first year in the league, and there's nothing wrong with having a very deep defense.

And yet you propose trading 1 dman a starter and a first in a good draft year for him. Seems highly counter productive and a waste of assets.

There's really no reason to assume Franson is the odd man out. He's our 3rd best defenceman, a position where we're weak. The Phaneuf-Gunnarsson pair has been too good to mess with. The Rielly-Gleason pair is unlikely to move anywhere, because of Rielly's draft position / contract (too valuable) and Gleason's contract (too big nobody will give us value for him). Neither defenceman has shown any indication that we'd be ok with them in the top 4 on opening night next year.

That leaves Gardiner-Franson as the two options for improvement. Franson's the better defenceman (and brings things like size/physical play, and a big shot which are less available on the other 4 defencemen. Gardiner is the more valuable one and likely to be cheaper.

We're certainly in no position to know who will be available to us, and that will have a substantial bearing on who we ship out. Obviously the preference would be to get a guy that can play Franson's role (right side, big shot, and insulate for a puckmover like Gardiner/Rielly), but if we're looking at a defenceman like Giordano or Coburn, those guys probably fit better with a Franson than they do a Gardiner.

Franson will be too expensive for what he offers, especially considering that we have a number of good prospects coming up, and all the holes we have up front. Granberg, Percy, Brennan (PP specialist) and Finn(few years away) will need a place to play. Ranger has been really good since the break. If we stay with what we have and in the system, and continue to roll 7D, I could see:

Gunnar-Phaneuf
Reilly-Gleason
Gards-(Ranger or Granberg)
Brennan

Have to remember that in 15/16, both Kadri and Bernier will cash in big (+$5M/yr),, we can't handcuff ourselves as we don"t know where the cap is going after next year.

Gleason has stabilized the d-core and is one of our most necessary pieces. I do not consider him over priced personally, nor a bottom pairing.

Disagree completely. Many experts point to that it is Gleason that has been the stabilizing force in our D. He probably has 1 more year as a top 4 then would become a great 5-6 for his final year of his contract. Reilly has grown exponentially this year, and having Gleason has given him the opportunity to develop his offence. Franson, I agree, has size and a big shot, but is a liability in his own zone - to much so in my view to warrant the big cash, even considering what he brings in other facets of his play.
