I'll get ratio'd for this but what's the point of having rigorous testing and protocols at this point?
Every person inside the building has to be vaccinated. All the non-players/coaches have to wear masks. I think it's time to move on from all of this. At this point, if you're vaccinated, you should be protected, time to start getting back to normal.
The virus unto itself is serious enough that outbreaks still need to be contained.
Even if everyone is vaccinated, there's still about a 10%-20% chance of breakthrough infection... if all 30-40 members of the road team/personnel are exposed to an infected player, several of them are likely to become infected. Obviously those numbers are higher for the home team where a bunch of non-essential personnel are also in close contact with the team. Of those breakthrough infections, some are going to have serious long-term outcomes, as with the Oilers players whose careers have been altered. Sooner or later, especially among the older coaches and trainers, you're going to end up with a headline-worthy tragedy.
So they keep testing, identify where the outbreaks are happening, and contain them so they don't burn through the whole league.
I agree with the sentiment that this whole thing sucks and I'm ready to forget about it, but the entire nature of the issue is that this virus is nasty as hell and widespread outbreaks can't just be left to run unchecked.
