Dude is a 33 y/o 0.8 PPG two-way center with an 8M cap hit. Playoff performer, but hasn’t seen a series in 4 years.

Closest comp would probably be Claude Giroux at the end of last season. Trade restrictions, 2-way guy, even a team Captain.

Which would be your return for a deadline rental. A late first, maybe some prospect swaps and some random pick in a couple years.

But Couture’s contract also has 3 years left and at a rate well above what Claude got in UFA. Once you factor in the cap dump, the contract, the movement restrictions, you are looking at Steven Lorentz and a 3rd.

Couture buyout in 2025 seems reasonable depending on what the Sharks look like at that point. Otherwise they are probably stuck riding out that contract. No team would trade for it.

If there are two teams out there that traded for Milan Lucic, there is a team that would entertain a trade for Couture. The right combination of retention and/or eating a cap dump could help, and putting Couture in a Kadri-type of role could be attractive to a team that thinks their young core could be contenders with the right help.

Lucic was traded for an even worse contract so yeah maybe the Sharks could trade Couture for Bobrovsky or OEL.
