Wilf Paiement actually wore 99 for three seasons with the Leafs (1979-80, 1980-81 & 1981-82).

Rick Dudley of the Winnipeg Jets also donned number 99 for part of the 1980-81 season.

Gretzky, Paiement and Dudley are the only players to have ever worn 99 in the NHL.

Nope. Joe Lamb from New Brunswick played 7 games for the Canadians wearing #99. Two other players from Montreal donned the #99 that year but only in practice and never saw a regular season game. Mr. Lamb was the first player to wear #99 in the NHL.

Good find Jbg13. The info I got was from the Hockey Reference website that lists numbers worn by all NHL players. However, it turns out it only has sweater numbers available from the 1950-51 season to the present. As it is, Joe Lamb played for the Montreal Canadiens during the 1934-35 season when he wore number 99. Thanks for providing the info about Lamb.
