What would it cost the Habs to dump Jordan Weal? He has 1 year remaining on a 1.4M contract. He's costing the Habs 300K against the cap (as he is buried) and doesn't have a chance to earn a spot.

So it boils down to the cost of 300K of capspace. What does that cost in these here flat cap / COVID times?
Just depth guy, taxi squad. He's good on faceoffs. May come on handy as season goes along. 300k isn't much.

Montreal don't need to trade Weal .

I think Bergevin must already have called everybody about this. Most teams are working with a tight budget... Normal times, I believe he would already be gone for a 4th or a 5th, Covid times ouch

Habs don't need to trade Weal. True. But with Weal's 300K overage caphit gone, we could activate Perry off the taxi-squad. At the moment, we can't.
The team is playing great the players on the taxi squad will play if they are needed.

I refuse to accept that 300K of cap freedom costs a 3rd round pick.

We seem to be going in circles discussing Weal's value (or their lack of).

Perry is going to come off the Taxi squad tomorrow anyways to take Armia's spot in the line-up.

Once Army is healthy, Perry would return to taxi squad but will need to clear waivers...

Not necessarily. Even if we assume he doesn't have the same kind of veteran expectations that Spezza has in Toronto (wouldn't report to a claiming team), Montreal has the cap space to keep him if desired. They moved him to the taxi squad at an opportune time to help accrue available cap space.

I don’t believe they have enough capspace to keep him on the roster permanently.

Per capfriendly, they have $792,311 in current cap space. Perry's full season AAV is $750,000. They can keep him permanently if they absolutely believe it advisable. Whether they'd want to or need to is another story.

They wouldn’t want to obviously as they need tofree up cap for additional shortterm injuries.

They'll need to move Armia to LTIR if Byron can't play Saturday (or play 7 D), which changes the math completely.

They can also double up their AHL paper transactions with Suzuki, Kotkaniemi, Romanov, etc. to accrue cap of they keep Perry.

Really, if they get into serious, crazy injury trouble, then moving Weal's contract isn't going to help them meaningfully.

That’s not ideal. If Army is on LTIR he automatically misses a minimum of 10 games. Now perhaps his concussion symptoms require that duration. But its a limitation of LTIR.
