I don't think covid has become "irrelevant." I think protesters have decided that challenging police brutality and structural racism is bigger than their own health. Admirable in a sense. I do hope those who participate in these assemblies recognize that they are likely vectors now and are vigilant about avoiding vulnerable family/friends.

That's the problem, if there virus couldn't spread to their moms, dads, and grandparents I would say it's 100% admirable. It seems a lot of people are forgetting the virus is contagious because I keep reading things like "who does it hurt, other than the protesters who volunteer?"

Deblasio seems to be in a cheery mood. So hopefully in two weeks will see NYC enter phase 2, and mid Hudson enter phase 3.

I understand not allowing protest talk concerning strictly about the protests, but censoring what the effects of the protests can result in as it relates to COVID i’m confused why is being deleted? Seems like a pretty huge deal..

edit- and to go further on topic, if numbers dont go up after these massive gatherings with no masks for most, then come the next hockey season arenas better be full again.

I mean, given that nearly every discussion about the protests in here has been related to COVID, the fact that they gave that warning means that's out of bounds too. It's understandable.

Oh, i thought it was more people arguing about the actual protests and their cause. Not as how it related to covid.

I get it but it seems like a relevant Covid concern. I feel like this thread has been way more civil than most other things I see when it comes to this political issue.

We will see. Here in NC, we're in Phase 2 but people have been doing crazy things like having a couple of thousand people at a stock car race. That's happened a couple of times, but this weekend they did it again and said it was a "peaceful protest"...

Anyway, the numbers are seeing a bit of a spike here, though not back to exponential growth. Hospitalizations are up.

Because most of you aren't able to keep the discussion there and, as it already has, turns into a political shitfest.

The discussion remains COVID-19 only. No protests. No riots. Nothing.

Otherwise we will just close the thread permanently and you all can go discuss it elsewhere. End of discussion.

Is anyone out and about in the city today and able to comment on how phase 1 is looking? I Google mapsed my drive to work out of curiosity this morning and it looked like a bit more traffic than the past couple of weeks but nothing close to the usual.

Phase 1 doesnt really open much. We’ll see how things look when 2 opens.

I had a specialist appointment today (akin to physical therapy). Took an Uber. The car had a shield around the driver, who was also wearing mask and gloves. Everyone at the specialist's office was also wearing masks and gloves, there were social distancing signs everywhere, temperature check by the receptionist, and the vibe was . . . well, not upbeat. Everyone was on edge, it was awkward, and I wanted to be back home as soon as possible. The moral of the story for me is even as places begin to re-open, we have a long long way to go before "business as usual."

Haircut on Friday in the afternoon. I should go on a scale before and after. :sarcasm:
Before quarantine, if i went more than 15 days without i haircut I went a little crazy...closing in at around 85 days. Nice to save money from that, but the bigger bonus is you really can't see my receding hairline anymore

First the surface spread is insignificant and now the asymptomatic spread is insignificant. And yet, two million Americans infected.

There's a particular way this spreads like wildfire and they evidently don't know what that is.

Yikes, WHO has been absolutely terrible during this entire pandemic. Glad we arent paying them money, they also claimed at the start the virus stays on surfaces for days which was false. You would think they would run some actual tests before releasing data to cause more fear in people..
So what you're saying is that WHO should have known how the virus spreads from the very beginning despite early evidence suggesting otherwise. The CDC provided a table of where this early evidence came from. I don't see WHO mentioned anywhere.

Table 1 - Evidence Supporting Transmission of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 While Presymptomatic or Asymptomatic - Volume 26, Number 7—July 2020 - Emerging Infectious Diseases journal - CDC

As far as I know there are no peer reviewed studies suggesting what you said, just a quote from a news conference based on preliminary data from contact tracing. In fact this is contrary to the conclusion from a recent publication from the NEJM.

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMe2009758

"Moreover, live coronavirus clearly sheds at high concentrations from the nasal cavity even before symptom development. Although the investigators were not able to retrospectively elucidate specific person-to-person transmission events and although symptom ascertainment may be unreliable in a group in which more than half the residents had cognitive impairment, these results indicate that asymptomatic persons are playing a major role in the transmission of SARS-CoV-2."

Using that kind of thing to say the WHO is doing a terrible job is a vast misunderstanding of science and medicine.

Even if this does turn out to be true, the initial reports said that asymptomatic spread was definitely a thing. That science wasn't conclusive, either, but could you imagine the outcry if they didn't tell anyone... then it turned out that the science confirms that it does?
