Keep in mind, DL's been working on the Scuderi deal since the middle of the season. He knows what Scuds is asking for. The fact that no agreement has been made speaks volumes.

Teams can only be X amount over the cap during the summer. Scuderi, Mitchell, and Regehr all on the cap, with everyone else still on the team, may push the Kings over whatever the limit is.

Lombardi has to know, or at least have a decent idea, of what the situation with Scuderi is. There may not have been talks involving specific numbers, but just a general sense of what was going on. Why else lock up Regehr as early as he did?

Maybe sign Regehr as insurance in case Mitchell can't go, but Mitchell's cap hit counts until they can figure things out with him. That's where the problems with signing Scuderi come up.

It's 10% and no they wouldn't, the 10% upper limit would be about $70.7M

This player is an example of everything done right...high draft pick, plays in the AHL as an underager....spends 3 full seasons, progressing each season...come up to the NHL, wins the Cup AND comes back the year after a even better player. He even spends part of the year in the AHL during the lockout. Voynov had many chances to go back to the KHL and he didn't.

VV was arguably our best d-man this past year. He wants to get better and the Cup didn't make him passive about winning or getting better.

I've said it time and time again, Voynov NEVER had a chance to go to KHL. Not ONCE. This off-season would have been his first chance to head to KHL. The KHL and NHL have an agreement to respect each other's contract and that agreement has been respected by BOTH sides (see Prokhorkin, Nikolai and Visnovsky, Lubomir). Voynov has been under contract with NHL since 2008 (when the KHL-NHL agreement was first signed due to the Radulov signing). He has not had a chance.

I am not trying to take anything away from Voynov, I am a huge fan and the guy has been a consummate professional. But he has not had any chance to head to KHL since signing in NHL 5 years ago.

Wasn't there an interview from 2010-2011 where he said if he didn't make the Kings he would consider returning to Russia. Someone posted and translated...then, not long after, he gets the call up and the Kings win the Cup.

Great to hear he's locked up at that price. Doughty should be taking notes because he makes WAY more and Voynov has outplayed him, offensively at least. Kid's gonna be real good...

i know you inserted the offensive caveat, but it's strange how Doughty is becoming underrated. this guy may not be scoring the points, but Sutter is riding Doughty as hard as he does Quick. DUring the playoffs, it was almost like Doughty was on every shift (what was he, #2 for ATOI only to Chara, the beast). He gets the toughest assignments and is expected to contribute defensively and offensively. There's no doubt that Doughty is a clear #1 on our team.

That said, I could only wish we got Voynov for 8 years, but i'm ecstatic we got him long term. Just wish we had space to sign other players.

Just have to wait and see. Lombardi obviously knows what Scuderi means to a team, since he gave him all that money 4 years ago. He knows how important he's been to this team specifically. If he can bring Scuderi back, he will.

He may have said and thought that. However there is no possible way that would have happened. Players don't always know the whole story. However it may have shown how frustrated he was with LA management, which would not have been good either.

That agreement has proven binding for players a lot more recognizable and marketable than Voynov was at that time, the KHL would not have risked that agreement for an AHL player. A Malkin or Ovechkin? Yeah the KHL tears that agreement up and goes to war. Not a Voynov (even now).

Doughty had the more difficult role, especially this season with Mitchell being gone. It wouldn't have mattered if he'd have had no goals, he did everything else well.

Wow. I thought for sure he gets $4.5M per. Good bit of saving there.

The really amazing thing about Slava is he did so much offensive damage without playing the entire year on the #1 PP unit.

He has the shot and vision to be a 15-20G, 60 point blue liner. Will be awesome to see him and Doughty for the next 6 years.

Closer to 4 than 4.5+.

Congrats to all involved.

The right side of the lineup -- offense and defense -- is aces. The left side --- ???. Weird how that worked out.

*sigh*

This is a great contract for the Kings and for Voynov.

What's it like to have a GM who has a clue? I'd like to know.

Look at the bright side. You have Streit and Meszaros locked up at $9.5MM a year while we have Doughty and Voynov for $11.1MM.

When you put it like that, Homer doesn't look so bad, does he? Does he?

As many mistakes as DL makes sometimes, the guy really knows how to come back from them and get the good deals done. Total steal for 4mil a year.

Another great King.

From pick to prospect to player DL and crew did this one perfectly. VV signed today for a very team friendly deal showing his dedication to the team and to being a King for a long time to come.

Great signing at a great price.

Lombardi is a really great GM.
