You can buyout injured players. Simon Despres was bought out a few years ago.

The Ducks had to have the NHLPA agree to allow the buyout while he was injured. Normally teams can't buy players out while they're injured. That is why the Kings had to move Greene off of LTIR to buy him out.

Did you guys read the updated article on the Graves trade?

Graves traded to Devils by Avalanche for Maltsev, pick

From Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald :

"Ryan Graves has been a player we've been discussing internally for quite some time, probably close to two years, a year and a half," Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald said Friday. "... And to nail it down and acquire a player like Ryan, we're ecstatic. He's just a player that, there's nothing fancy about him, he's just a hard-nosed, simple, puck-moving, big body (6-foot-5, 220 pounds) that can skate ... things that we admire.

"We want to be a team that's tough to play against, we want to be a team that the gap gets closed quicker, and he does that. He helps elevate our [defensemen].

Is EJ a candidate for Ltir??
That's the wild card, right? He just missed an entire season (save four games) and likely suffered a severe concussion. What does his medical report look like? LTIR of $6 million changes a lot of dynamics. Especially with Compher or Donkey likely on the way to Seattle.

Maltsev kinda gives me the Puljujärvi vibe - not saying he's on par, better or anything, but just a similar play style. The most positive thing about this trade is the free cap space and the fact that the team is not much worse after it.

That sounds like they will have a defensive system and coaching to maximize what Graves can bring.

Never cross the red line and hit everything that moves and Graves gets to play. With his relatively decent straight ahead skating and size he should be quite good at that.

The Aves system of turning down physical play and everyone skating and passing fast is a misfit with Graves skills.

Does Graves hit everything that moves? He's gotta be the softest big D man in the league.

Why are guys allowed to post blatant lies in here? This is rediculous

I'm not sure, I agree though it is a blatant lie to think Graves hits everything that moves. That's what you meant right? Surely you don't think Graves is some physical defenseman? Yeah he was 2nd on the team in hits but was almost 150th in the league...he plays small I'm sorry if that upsets you.

Almost as ridiculous as your spelling of ridiculous. Graves may make a hit along the boards or battle in front of the net but that is the absolute bare minimum for a bottom defenseman. He's not some tone setter or someone that is going to lay his body out on a nightly basis and make a big hit, he is entirely replaceable just going off of the bare minimum that you expect from what should be a 5th/6th defenseman. This is without bringing up the fact that he is a defensive zone turnover machine and that he believes he is some offensive prodigy who shoots into shin pads instead of passing to Makar or Mackinnon.

Ryan Graves' hits per 60 totals are in the same range as defensemen like Haydyn Fleury, Carson Soucy, Justin Braun, Jake McCabe, Olli Maatta, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Adam Pelech, Dmitry Orlov, Cody Ceci and Tucker Poolman.

A guy that people believe is too soft for his size in Brandon Carlo hits more than Graves does. Same goes for Phil Myers, Jeff Petry, Nick Holden, Yannick Weber, and everyone's favourite Nikita Zadorov who basically hits, statistically, more than 2x the amount Graves does.

We need someone who can be more physical though and can handle playoffs physically.

Good point on his physicality. Nothing impressive. We are just tad too soft in general.

What I'm saying is that's how a good coach should handle Graves. Never ever let him go into the o zone.

If he doesn't have 5 hits a game he sits. Basically like when goons were forced by their coached to fight.

Graves should only be in a roster to use his size to hit things. He sure as hell shouldn't be on a roster to carry the puck or score.

Hey look on the bright side. We are all out of bottom defenders that Bednar likes to over play. He will have no choice but to use one of our good defensmen for this. Although there is still a chance we aquire one of these types before the season starts

The question is, can you coach that out of him? He (for whatever reason) believes he has offensive instincts and is a good 2 way dman. He believes he has a cannon shot and is a good passer. But he's not. Can that be coached out of him? Maybe, maybe not.

I feel like Graves entire rep is hinged on that +/- stat and he was about the 4th or 5th most impactful player on the ice to accumulate said stat.

Don't count out Bednar suiting up and jumping over those boards himself if it came down to him not having a big dumb Dman to overplay

2 years from ufa and can't crack a bottom feeding devils lineup and has a rep for not being coachable?

That's a way to never play in the NHL again.

Graves hasn't shown he won't listen to his coach. Considering how Bednar fed Graves minutes despite the poor play I think Graves played exactly as he was asked to do.
