What was the point of Carolina signing Jones in the first place? He was never going to make Carolinas defense in the first place. Weird.

- To the people who are quoting me. Its not a big deal either way lol.

Perhaps JFMJ put in an additional good word on Caleb's behalf

He was signed when it seemed like a Pesce or Skjei move would happen. Once the Canes decided to stand pat, it made no sense to have him as an 8/9D, and they're undoing it by basically just giving him away.

Carolina played two preseason games on the same day, and needed vets to meet minimum vet quota for a preseason game

Guessing the Avs have some lingering injuries on their defense. Surprised they didnt nab someone from the jackets.

they do and as Avs history prooves, will always have at least 1 injured dman.
I think CBJ probably want something of value for their guys, and I don't think the Avs saw much of a future for Burke at the NHL level so it didn't cost them anything in the end.

They wanted to test out some lefty depth, but they clearly still prefer Coghlan as the 8D on the team.

This is a good move for Caleb Jones, and I would not be surprised if it was done as a pseudo-favor. Jack Johnson is currently the 6D, and if this guy can even play halfway-decently, he'll be back in the NHL at least semi-regularly.

Interesting. Currently the Avs brought up Annunen and Tufte to use up Frankie's cap. Might change but strange for now since we need 7D.

Carolina doesnt have a AHL team?

Yeah; IIRC Carolina’s philosophy leans towards prioritizing the Cup while the Chicago Wolves (former affiliate) wasn’t pleased with what they intimated was poor attention to development.

Dundon (Canes owner) wants to make a new AHL team supposedly.

You have it backwards. The Wolves are the team that wants to play veterans over prospects. This is very likely going to lead to a 33rd AHL team so that the Canes can actually develop their prospects and the Wolves can permanently stay as AHL rogue actors to pay and ice the likes of Tynan/Poturalski/Terry/Dalpe/etc.
