I think it’s called negotiation. It’s what happens when you don’t just hand your player a blank check. Most GMs use this tactic. Sakic is pretty decent at it.

Sakic is doing a great job in Colorado, pretty fair contract. Wasn't too long ago he was getting roasted for the Duchene situation, they're set up very well to contend for the next few years now.

If there is a player who reminds me of a young Jagr in the league, it's Rantanen. I'm not saying he will be an all-time great, but what a fabulous player. Great contract.

Yeah, this looks bad on the Leafs for sure. But let's not be smug about it, we all love the same sport.
