My only guess beyond just basic stupidity is that he's been healthy scratched and at risk of losing his roster spot and maybe he thought a big hit would prove his value. Instead it will have the opposite effect because he'll be sitting for awhile.

It shows it was completely intentional, but I don't think Eakin got him primarily in the head, so it could be worse. That should be a suspension for sure, indefensible hit.

Lundqvist mistimed the handling of that puck. First, he wanted to stop it and leave it for his defender then saw the defender was expecting a pass so he went back to play it. Eakin is not letting up on the play and the speed at which he was going, the space he had behind the net, and Lundqvist's mistiming resulted in Lundy in a heap on the ice.

Had Lundqvist not mistimed that pass, the puck would've been on his defenders stick and Eakin would have simply used that space where he hit Lundqvist to maintain his speed as he swings back into his own zone.
