I think either Connor or Ehlers, who is arguably the better passer, would work well in the Wheeler spot. A skilled LHS there can:
- can receive passes quickly with minimal repositioning
- elect to pass or shoot with minimal repositioning, allowing for 1-touch and 1-timers
- sees the slot well, so can anticipate D and G positioning and poke checks
- sees seam and both point options well
- has much more of the net to shoot at
- can switch out with netfront player and move into place for a deflection if required
- isn't Wheeler
The fact that various non-Wheeler setups haven't been tried regularly, let alone with POs on the line this season, esp given the visible improvements with Ehlers in that position a while back don't make sense to me.
Maurice likes what is familiar and is fairly risk adverse. He likely deems changing things up now as too big of a risk.
I hope we see a bunch of different things trailed next preseason and early in the year.
