If we lost in game 6 or 7 to the Panthers, not one person on the planet would be defending this guy. That run gave an extra life to too many people in the organization.

If he had been dealt the same **** hand he was after that year I think the same people would be defending him. And it's not even so much defending him as it is saying many of this team's problems since that run lie in the construction of the team more so than coaching or systems. And I'm so tired of this ******** "that run was the worst thing to happen" argument. That run had absolutely nothing to do with the loss of talent we had which led directly to the situation we've been in since. Yeah, maybe Pete would have been fired last year. So we'd have somebody else in charge of this **** show instead.

But we didn't so who the **** still cares?

Keep looking back at the past and going in circular discussions that get nowhere

You can't play that card about the Panthers because the devils beat the panthers.

DeBoer may be the greatest coach, but his take away from his Devils time should be his lack of adjustments and heavy reliance on lunch pail.

There is no defending this guy, I don't care what the teams he coached looked like. In 39 months of his NHL career, he had 4 months of winning hockey. That is PATHETIC. Even if you look past wins/losses, his defensive scheme sucked from day #1. It's been two games since he's been gone and our D positioning/team play already looks better. His system was supposed to be an aggressive forechecking one, but I haven't seen anything that resembles that since the lockout season. The flow from our own end to the opposing team's blueline was non-existent for the last two years, and this despite having some young d-men who can actually move the puck up the ice. He continuously mismanaged the goalie situation, starting in 2013 when he decided that playing a 39 year old Moose on his last leg for ten straight games was a good idea (embarrassing him in the process). Then last year he decided it was more important to stroke Marty's ego then to do the right thing and play the better goalie more frequently. And this year he goes in the total opposite direction and starts Cory for an absurd amount of games to start the year. I mean he broke Marty's record for consecutive starts...what kind of coach does that to a goalie who is in his first year of being a #1 goalie? It took him more than two months to give Kincaid a shot and guess what...he played fine. Guy had no balls as a coach and routinely stayed within his comfort zone whether it was with specific players or boneheaded decisions, regardless of how much evidence there was that it wasn't working anymore. And while his handling of young players has been negatively overblown, he certainly did not seem like the kind of coach that could instill confidence in a struggling player or someone who knew how to push the right buttons.

So you can sit there and talk all day about how the team is constructed, but bottom line is this guy is nothing but an average coach (at best). The respect he gets, I'm not sure where that comes from but I feel confident in saying that I doubt Pete will ever be a truly successful NHL coach. Unless of course he makes some considerable changes.

DeBoer has a great background story. Hockey league player drafted into the NHL. Goes to law school in Canada, gets a job writing the legal notices on Corel Paint that you don't read and just click agree to. Gets bored of that and starts to coach from OHL up to the NHL.

He is media savy and the meme of "horses left the barn" will get him another job somewhere. He said the same thing of his time in FLA. Any he goes, he can say he didn't have enough horses. The onus is then on the GM and not him.

Go to the cup finals in first year, suck from day 1.

Sounds like HF in a nutshell.

The team did not play above average during that first year until like February or March. And I said specifically that his defensive schemes sucked from day 1.

I didn't even get into other things. How he insisted that Kovy play right wing (not his natural position) no matter the circumstance. How he played Kovy 25 minutes a night, when it wasn't always necessary and sometimes came at the determent of team and/or the player. The sometimes bizarre lineup choices. The pattern of blowing leads. His inaccurate assessments of performance (a game in which you get 11 shots is a good road game...really??).

It's a lot of little things that really might not be a big deal when isolated...but when you put them all together, for several years, and the on-ice results are not positive...well...

The team did not play above average during that first year until like February or March.

Forwards used in the first half of 2012 included:
Sykora 82 games
Cam Janssen 48 games
Mattias Tedenby 43 games
Jacob Josefson 41 games
Nick Palmieri 29 games
Brad Mills 27 games
Tim Sestito 18 Games
Steven Zalewski 7 games
Stephane Veilleux 1 game

Defensemen used in the first half of 2012 included:
Adam Larsson 65 games
Matt Taormina 30 games
Kurtis Foster 28 games
Alexander Urbom 5 games
Mark Fraser 4 games

None of these players (except Sykora) played beyond February/March and None played in the playoffs. The line up was missing Zajac all season.

The first half of the 2011-12 was a terrible team that was kept afloat by the top line and winning shootouts.

They added Zidlicky, Ponikarovsky, Bernier, Gionta, plucked Carter off waivers early in the year, got Zajac back at the end of the season...

They scraped the bottom of the barrel to put together that roster just like they did the year before because of financial reasons . They got lucky with the crap they added...They happen to catch lightening in a bottle finding chemistry on the 4th line and revamping their 3rd line that provided a shot of secondary scoring that we haven't had since then.

below average head coach.

results speak for themselves.

I think he's an above average coach who will have many suitors waiting for him. The problem is that he was the wrong coach for us, once the composition of the roster changed.

I think we can officially drop the Brodeur cost us those 14 wins he lost fallacy considering Cory's record with the same (actually better) team in front of him this year.... It's pretty clear who was the better all-round goalie at winning games.

Pete won because he stepped into a situation where the team was already stable, and he needed to make minor tweaks to already established lines that had already been formed and had momentum.

He is terrible at BUILDING a team - but he was fine pushing his players into a more aggressive forecheck system that suited their games.

Once we lost those speedy forechecking players, he started floundering in the exact same fashion JMac floundered in - frantically swapping lines and benching players.

Same result.

Correct. Last year's team doesn't make the playoffs with Cory playing more games. The reason they didn't gain entry was the 28th ranked offense. It's always the freaking offense in this organization. It's a chronic problem from year to year.

What makes him a good coach? What are his signature strengths?

To start the year he had Parise, Kovy, Elias, Zubrus, Clarkson, Sykora (who would go on to score 20 goals). By game #9 they added Henrique. That's not enough to be an above average team?

But to play along with your little game...here's some of the folks that were used in 2009-2010:

Colin White (already on his last leg): 81 games
Mike Mottaeu: 79 games
Rob Niedermayer: 71 games
Rod Pelley: 63 games
Dean Mccammond: 62 games
Mark Fraser: 61 games
Niclas Bergfors: 54 games
Jay Pandolfo (already on his last leg): 52 games
Vladimir Zharkov: 40 games
ILKKA PIKKARAINEN: 31 games
Andrew Peters: 29 games
PIERRE-LUC LETOURNEAU-LEBLOND: 27 games
Martin Skoula: 19 games
Matt Corrente: 12 games
Cory Murphy: 12 games
Tim Sestito: 9 games
Ansi Salmela: 9 games
Patrick Davis: 8 games
Nick Palmieri: 6 games
Tyler Eckford: 3 games
Ben Walter: 2 games
Rob Davison: 1 game

That team was also basically being carried by their first line. They had 23 ROW's through December, compared with Pete's 10 ROW's in the same time span in 2011.

The 2009-2010 team also finished with 103 points despite having no real threats on the 3rd and 4th line. Meanwhile the 2011-2012 team finished with one less point than that, even though for two months they were rolling four solid lines who all contributed and a dynamic offensive-minded defenseman that they were lacking for years. Pete's team couldn't even score more goals than that 2009-2010 team...222 vs. 228.

Not Pete's fault...right...
