Jeez why not name Bergevin for assistant coach and chief of special teams while you're at it.

At worst, he gets sent to Laval or traded to another team. I don't see why the 2nd year is bad. Probably helped lower the AAV by 50-100k or so.
Also he likely would have waited to hit the open market if we didn't give him the second year. Many teams need a depth dman who shoots right.

He really picked up his share of points and seemed to built some chemistry with Caufield.. which is good for him..

I wouldnt be surprise if he has a career year then get traded for a decent return at next year TDL for teams looming for a PP specialist.

So far, our vet depth chart:

Edmundson Petry
Romanov Savard
Schuneman Wideman

I think Harris is definitely ready. But Hughes said he wants to have vets in place in order to ensure the rookies (Harris, Barron, Guhle, etc...) aren't rushed. I still think if Petry is traded, we sign another vet RHD.

I still wouldn't be surprised to see MSL go with:

Edmundson Barron
Romanov Savard
Guhle Harris
Wideman, Schuneman
I like Schueneman and think he has potential to be a regular NHLer but it seems a stretch to call him a vet considering he has a grand total of 24 NHL games to his name.

There's always this assumption that because we signed a guy they will be a regular and it's not true. Wideman is more then likely the 7th D (Who will play 50-60 games because of injuries), there's no risk involved because if he can't handle that role he can be scratched or sent down with no cap consequences.

Considering our direction and cap structure this makes sense. The guys like him and he keeps the mood light in the room. He understands his role and has bought in to the direction of the club.

A 2 year contract at the minimum can't hurt us, He signed early and could have probably found a better 1 year deal somewhere else. I'm good with it.

Romanov should be playing with Harris. Romanov is not a rookie anymore , he's a young vet with playoffs experience also. Savard with Guhle would make more sense.

Rotate the kids with Schue and Wideman depending on their performance.

Worth noting, after MSL took over Wideman finished just outside the top 30 for points by D during that time with 17 points in 32 games.

For under a million a year, it is a very solid deal for the team.
Will be interesting to see how many points he can get in a full season.
There just may be some trade value there.

I'm not a big fan of Schueneman. In this case I consider a vet any player that we don't have to worry about burning out (i.e. throwing to the Wolves) because they're too young and green. If Schueneman can play a regular NHL shift now, when will he ever be able to?

Bergevin had a tough time, operating the habs while in Montreal...........no way he could do it from out there!!

Glad he is running for coffee, and cheese cake for Luc and Rob.....good luck!

It's a nothing move , just a depth guy to have on a roster as a 7/8 D. But hey if you have to go outside the organisation to replace Wideman you might aswell keep him . At least they already know him and they know what he can bring... as for bringing someone else from the outside , you dont always know what you will get.

Not his biggest fan but meh..... choo choo I guess....

Points from a 6th/7th Dmen as a PP specialist. We could do worse.... If he manages the current pace we might even get a TDL return down the line.

This however more or less spells out the Guhle and Barron will start out in the AHL next year, which I'm pretty happy about.

Exactly, it's a nothing move. There is nothing good or solid about this move.

He had a strong March and April (16 points in 24 games) which helped him have 27 points in 64 games.

Not easy to get what works out to a 30+ point defenceman in a full season for league minimum. He must have really enjoyed playing for MSL and the Habs.

Great move extending him. If he has a strong season next year he will be fantastic trade bait to a cap team.

And if he gets sent to Laval the whole cap hit goes with him. The 2nd year is fine, maybe it gets the deal done vs trying to offer 1 year at roughly the same dollars where Wideman might try his luck on the open market.

Nothing wrong with this at all, it's a guy who a) allows the team to not force the young D into the lineup but b) is a guy who you can easily pressbox if said young D show they are ready. And you do need some D who you can use on the PP.
