CHL/Junior Emergency call up rules

What is the rule for NHL teams to be able to call up junior players on emergency?

Example:Baertschi in 2012 I think...

When and in what circumstances can you call up a junior player during season?

I believe they have to sign a amateur try-out contract.

The Penguins had goalie issues in 2010 and had to sign one of their draft picks out of Tri-City for a game... and he played!

Alexander Pechursky came in for a period. Poor kid was scared crapless because it was against Vancouver (who was good at the time). He had to wear Marc-Andre Fleurys pads that didn't even fit him correctly. That's the only time he ever played in the NHL.

It happened with the Sabres & Guhle in December. Buffalo was hit by injuries on defense in the AHL & NHL.
