Maybe the CHL should ban Americans next? After all, the U.S. has won a couple of WJC gold medals recently, and a lot of Americans are taking up spots that could be filled by Canadians in the league. Off the top of my head, last year the Whalers had Americans Stefan Noesen, Vince Trocheck, Ryan Hartman, Cody Payne, Austin Levi, and both goalies -- Matt Mahalak and Alex Nedeljkovic -- playing key roles on the team. David Branch must put an end to this now! :sarcasm:

Nah, first you gotta get rid of the US teams. This is the Canadian Hockey League, don't you know? It should be only for those good Canadian boys.

So sayeth Don Cherry...

IMHO Don Cherry is more right than wrong on a lot of things but if he said this then this time he would be 100% wrong!

If u look at this rule, its doing one thing. Its protecting the bottom end goalies in the CHL. Brent Morin and Alex Nedeljkovic will still be there as rookie's just drafted. The top Canadian goalies are already there. CHL has 60 teams- 120 goalies. I believe 80% are North American. Now 16-17 yr old goalies will be backups instead of playing Junior A. Is that better for them? U could argue both ways. If the jump is too big, it can shatter confidence.

Hockey Canada should put together a group of Goalie coaches. Start in Minor Bantam, help develop these goalies every summer. In fact the USA is doing that. Take a page from them. For example:

The Warren Strelow National Team Goaltending Camp, which features the top goaltenders eligible for international play in select age groups. Takes place in Ann Arbour Michigan.

The four-day elite camp will cover the physical and mental aspects of the goaltending position, helping each goaltender master the fundamentals of the position while developing a personal identity that translates into game success.

The camp will be led by Mike Ayers, Warren Strelow mentor and U.S. National Team goaltending coach, and regional mentors Matt Millar, Jared Waimon and Adam Berkohoel. In addition, assistant mentors Joe Exter, Bob Janosz, Derek Lalonde, David Lassonde, Nick Petraglia and Alison Quandt will be on hand for instruction, as well as several guest coaches, including: Mike Buckley, goaltender coach at the University of New Hampshire; Ty Conklin, former National Hockey League and World Championship goaltender; Erin Whitten-Hamlen, head women's ice hockey coach at the University of New England; Phil Osaer, assistant coach for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the United States Hockey League and former NHL and Olympic goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck. Here is the list of Boys goalies they had this year participating.

Hopefully u could get some big Canadian names to give back to hockey. Maybe Patrick Roy could be involved. Ken Dryden, Martin Brodeur, Sean Burke, and various successful Canadian Goalie coaches that work in the NHL/AHL levels. Put a big team of coaches like the USA have done and this should do wonders. Goalie is a unique position. Im not sure a Dad or former NHL player(Ken Strong) that is coaching minor bantam, bantam or minor midget, can really give a goalie alot of advice and work on techniques. A summer camp would be massive. As would an open door policy that could enable some of these young bantam, minor midget, OHL goalies to seek advice from these past players and coaches during the season when they may feel like they are struggling with things.
