I hadn't seen the game. That was epic. Crazy. Great recommendation @Wyatt Earp !

The top three finishers in the Chess World Cup 2023Candidates Tournament 2024 - Wikipedia

India R Praggnanandhaa (runner-up)
United States Fabiano Caruana (3rd place)
Azerbaijan Nijat Abasov (4th place) (expected replacement for Carlsen).

Thanks. When we discussed who the other four players to make the Candidates would be I just named some of my favorites. I like Fabi but he is not a strong Candidates player. Some of the actual favorites are Gukesh, Wesley, Anish, Arjun, and Abdus. Any favorites or predictions among the nine non-Carlsen players mentioned in this post? @ORRFForever

I’m at the level where people don’t really play openings, everyone brings their Queen out early, they push flank pawns, and trade pieces just for the sake of trading. I know what they’re doing is inaccurate but I struggle sometimes to punish it. I hate the Scandinavian. I do a lot of puzzles which help with pattern recognition.

@ORRFForever I’ve been using the Vienna like you suggested. I dig it.

Just a silly video but I made a similar decision as the video maker, many years ago, at a similar rating level - "Taking a break from chess". I was tired of studying. Tired of the tournaments. Just tired.

TBH, most players go through this and many never go back to competitive chess. It is just too time consuming and they think, "There's more to life".

I've always wondered why he's not more active.

He's been ill but is coming back for the Super GM Tata Steel chess tourney. If anyone is unfamiliar with it, I'll try to post some of the Super GMs from the last one.

Shirov "frequently worked his way deep into the World Championship cycles, coming as close to the pinnacle of chess as winning the right to challenge Garry Kasparov for the Classical World Championship, meeting Viswanathan Anand in the final of the 2000 Knockout Tournament and playing in the final match of the World Chess Cup (2007) and playing in the 2007 Candidates. He has been officially ranked as high as number 2 in the world". The chess games of Alexey Shirov

I don't blame Carlsen for losing interest. He didn't have a rival like Karpov (Caruana is not strong in the Candidates) and the competition was very strong in the nineties. If any 21st Century non-WC was born 20 years earlier, would they have been as strong as Shirov at his peak? I don't think so.

Fischer lost interest, too. There's a picture after he lost - looking beyond depressed.

Kasparov was HIGHLY competitive and he somehow maintained his desire to be the best. That's why he will always be the GOAT.

Think of the endless hours Magnus has to give up to win a tournament. It must be exhausting and he know, if he fails, people will immediately question his greatness.

He doesn't need the money so I can see walking away.

@aufheben Perhaps this brand-new article by the great Andrew Martin will help you with the Scandinavian. I do puzzles every day.

I'm always amazed at the scarcity of German Super GMs.

A great game between 2 of the best Americans and non-WCs ever.

I like Oro as the next one. @ORRFForever
It's fascinating as Chess becomes more of a global game.
