Odd... My guess is it's a favour to Miller to give him a chance to land a deal with Carolina/Charlotte at seasons end. Carolina needs scoring and the east is much better suited to him, this gives Carolina a test run. Also Boychuck could come in and be a veteran, likely on an AHL only deal, for Bakersfield next year and this allows the Condors to test run him.

Hypotheticaly....turning Miller + into Murphy and Boychuk would be an interesting extension of Chia's plan of turning "not things" into "things"

Miller seems to be a better AHL and NHL player at this stage of his career. Boychuk is the definition of a nothing player. Garbage in the NHL and plateaued in the AHL a few years ago and isn't even a particularly effective player there anymore either.

And where does Murphy come into this?

This is "not things" into slightly worse "not things"

I remember watching Boychuk throughout his WHL career, he was amazing. Surprised and disappointed he could never really put it together at the NHL level.

Does anyone else remember when Zachary Boychuk was the offensive C with potential that the Oilers lacked?

Why would they even want Boychuk next year? They need to start giving their prospects ice time instead of icing an entire powerplay unit of AHL vets.

At least give your mediocre prospects a bunch of ice time so they can inflate their stats a bit and use them as assets. Oilers seem to think it's better for the prospects to play on the 3rd/4th lines while Ryan Hamilton and Matt Ford play huge minutes.

New GM, wants his players in the AHL not the former GM's who have accomplished very little? The purge isn't just at the NHL level.

You don't wanna play guys in a position they can't succeed in, even at the AHL level. Assuming they let Hamilton, Klinkhammer and McRae go they could still use a couple vets like Boychuk to help take some of the tough matchups. Plus the last couple years of trading picks away means the prospect pool is pretty dry up front.

Boychuk's put up a couple really strong years in the AHL before struggling these last couple. The organization doesn't have much for natural C's at the AHL level.
