I don't know about the genesis of the signing, but Mr. Johnny Hockey was a healthy scratch in year 2 of an 8 year contract.

Kotkaniemi's contract can be bought out at 1/3rd for 2 (maybe 3) more seasons. Gaudreau's is a twice as expensive anchor with no luxury of a 1/3rd buyout. Ironically both have a paltry 11 goals so far this season.
