Historically speaking of course because two series might be going to 7 where both of the other teams are stalled in doing so.

The 2003 Devils blew a 3-1 series lead and won away against the Senators. There have to be a few more examples

Canucks in 2011. Up 3-0, Lost 3 straight against the blackhawks, before winning game 7 (in OT).

IIRC they were also the better team in game 6 but lost that one. They weren't really the better team in game 7 and were a misplaced Sharp shot / good Luongo save away from being eliminated.

Anything can happen in a single game.

In 2010 Boston went up 3 games to 0 on Philly. Philly came back to force a game 7 but Boston went up 3-0 in game 7. I stopped watching after that but there is no way Boston would have blown that lead so I assume the won.

In the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals the Canes were up 3-1 on Edmonton. They lost at home in game 5 when Pisani scored a shorthanded goal in overtime. In game 6 they would get dominated in a 4-0 loss. They ended up winning game 7 and the Stanley Cup.

I like the idea is that you stopped following the playoffs that year right after that game

Ugh, easily the most crushing defeat as a sens fan in my life. Arvedson scored early the building was rocking then Langenbrunner then Karel Rachunek happened.

On that note I am having a hard time thinking of one...

Washington in Boston a couple years ago? Did they have momentum?

Kings in the wcf last year. Hawks played the same card the Habs did against TB of saying all the pressure was on the Kings to close out the series after they fell behind 3-1.

For what it is worth, in history, 9 times a series went 3-0 to 3-3. The team who won the first 3 games won 5 of those game 7, while the team who won the last 3 won 4 of those.

Leafs vs Bruins.

Leafs were beating the bruins to the puck battles and playing great, ended up winning both games 2-1 to even it up 3-3. Then in game 7 they were up 4-1 with all the momentum in the world. We know what happened next

Sadly enough the two examples that came to mind where the 2 times the Hawks lost in game 7.

Came back from 3-0 in Vancouver, Toews scores shorthanded with a minute or two left in the game to force OT. Thought they were going to do it, and then Chris Campoli gives it away. Still mad.

Then last year Hawks go down 3-1 against the Kings, force game 7 and take a 2-0 lead and lose in OT. I don't know if I'll ever get over that loss. I don't even like talking about it.

San Jose did it to Detroit a few years back I believe. Coughed up a 3-0 series lead but won game 7

2007-08 MTL/BOS ECQF. Montreal went up 3-1, Boston came back to force Game 7, and Montreal shellacked Boston 5-0 in that game.

Boston came back from 3-1 down against Carolina then dominated the next two games to tie it up 3-3. At the end of game 6, Scott Walker sucker punched Aaron Ward with two minutes in the game and inexplicably didn't get suspended, then scored in OT of Game 7.

Can we define 'momentum'? For instance, does every team who goes to game 7 after a 3-0 have a lack of momentum? What about 3-1? 3-2? What other situations cause a team to have a lack of momentum in a game 7?

There is no momentum between games.
There is only momentum during a game.

Agreed with the first statement. 100%

But even the second one is debatable.

A lot of it has to do with confirmation bias. You tend to remember these times when the pre-concieved notion of momentum goes the way it should and tend to forget all these times it didn't go according to plan.

For example, you team is losing 0-2. They score two goals early in the 3rd. Momentum swing right there. The thing is, you'll just remember these times when they actually win and forget when they lose.

Not saying there isn't a little bit of extra motivation from various factors in a game. But statistically speaking, when you look at it objectively, momentum is an uproven concept in hockey.

I will go with the 94 Rangers who looked tired, old , and defeated when they blew the 3-1 lead over the Canucks.

They summoned up a heroic effort in game 7 to eek out the win.
