When was the last time the Canes had to be aware of remaining cap space?

In 2011 we randomly spent that year and only had $2.2 mill in cap space.

The year of our big FA pickup, Tomas Kaberle.

I actually remember vividly being at Lens Crafters in Cary Town Center getting new glasses and got the alert that we signed Kaberle. I was excited as we had never signed a notable free agent before

My mid-June guess as to the team additions was 1) trade for Haula + Eakin and 2) sign Talbot (1 year x $1.5 million). They upgraded the goalie to Mrazek and swapped Eakin for Dzingle. Paid an asset to get rid of De Haan and have a $3.4 million Reimer on the books rather than a $1.2 million Darling buyout. Pretty big difference between the Canes adding a $6 million Cap talent and dead space in Marleau but a 1st round pick is better than having empty Cap space.

True, but once they sign McGinn and Williams, they'd be within $6M of the cap without Marleau's contract. It's been a long time since that has happened.

Weird what we remember. I was making meatloaf and mashed potatoes when that signing happened.

My guess is they are trying to talk Maenalanen into a lower one-way deal (something around Wallmark's salary) and he's the 13th forward.....unless Williams comes back and then I don't know what they're planning. Maybe bump up his NHL salary, give him a nice guarantee, and stash him in the AHL short term. If Williams comes back and McGinn get's re-signed, then we've got our 13 forwards.

Saku was an okay role player, but if he gets pushed down, or pushed out, that means we're a better team for it. He was fine, but nothing to lose sleep over if he's not on the team. People kept penciling in Nordstrom and Nestrasil to Staal's line the summer after their 20 game run that one year. I kept saying we wouldn't be a good team until those guys were pushed down to the 4th line or extra forwards at best. We're finally at that point, and it's everything I hoped it could be.

If Fleury gets actual meaningful ice time, I think he'll be OK. There are no glaring holes in his defense anyway. I like the one-way, one-year deal. Make it a sink or swim deal for him.

I personally haven't been impressed by his defense at the NHL level most of the time either. And obviously the less said about his offense to this point, the better. But I do hope he seizes the opportunity this year. He's got some tools to be a pretty solid dman if he puts it together.

Fun fact about Haydn Fleury: Among all 681 NHLers that played more than 240 5v5 minutes, Fleury ranks #1 in High Danger Chances For % at 68.3% (71 HDCF vs. 33 HDCA). #2 in the NHL for HDCF% is Dominic Simon with a 64% HDCF%.

With a mean of 50% and a standard deviation of 5.43% Haydn Fleury is nearly one full standard deviation higher than the #2 ranked NHLer in HDCF%.

Not enough data to make any meaningful conclusion but it is hopeful. Fleury does a good job of both limiting high danger chances against as well as being on the ice when high danger chances are generated.
