Maybe I'm alone here, but I've found Slavin to be pretty underwhelming thus far. Not saying he's been bad, but I'm not seeing the same jump that he had last year. He seems a half-step slower and has been a non-factor in the offensive zone. This is heavily influenced by the tougher matchups he faces, but Slavin has been on the ice for as many EVGA as both Hanifin and Faulk up to this point.

I just don't like the message of keeping him in after giving up 3 in the first. You pull him there and you're basically saying "yeah, bad game, it happens... We got you, get em next time". You keep him in and that's a "this is your mess to clean up, do better"... I don't like that, not for a team that has a history of goalies mentally crumbling over the long haul when the pressure builds.

maybe he asked peters to leave him in to prove himself? he failed, but possible explanation

Agreed. And...he didn't really do better. Sorry about the line change, but that last goal should have been stopped.

Look, he was given the contract and the job without really having to win it. How many games has he basically stolen this year? If you throw out the Toronto game where they scored 6, the Florida game is the only one where he's made 30 saves. Sure, that has to do with them limiting shots against in general, but when I look at their record, I don't think Scott Darling is a big reason for that. He's not really been a problem, but I think he needs a kick in the ass and for the competition to open up. Play the hot hand.

The 3rd goal is not OK, any goalie at that level needs to handle that puck cleanly 100% of the time. Flubbing it in that specific context, already trailing and near the end of a period, is unacceptable.

I think a bit too much is being made of the Boychuk goal. He has one of the biggest shots in the league and he got absolutely everything on it from middle distance. I’m more worried about two of our forwards totally bailing for a line change than I am about Darling failing to make a moderately tough save there.

To me, the game winner goes hand in hand with the 3rd goal flub. If you're going to be trusted to stay in after amateur hour, you damn well better make that save when your team fought back to bail your ass out.

I mean, it’s not exactly a super easy save. Boychuk has the next best thing to a Weber level slapshot, it’s like leaving Faulk open to wind all the way up. You can’t depend on the goalie to stop that.

I get it, but when you've basically been treading water all year, you've got to come up big there. Had he not whiffed on the 3rd goal, I would be more willing to forgive him for allowing a goal like that.

Skinner needs to use his ****ing head when there is no goalie in the net.

1. Don't throw the puck on net from below the line
2. don't try to make a low chance deke. just hit the puck back into the corner

This was my post-game rant #1, thank you for typing it out.

Did Peters seriously just put out the mother Faulking 4th line out with 50 seconds left and still a rare slight chance to comeback?? 2 goal comebacks can still happen, though rare. Way to give up on your team Peters.

No. You don’t judge one save based on another, and certainly not against the team’s performance thus far this season. Attempted saves are judged equally on their individual merits. Your viewpoint is clouded in emotion and completely unreasonable.

Actually, I can judge saves however I want to judge saves. If you're trusted to stay in after shitting the bed on the 3rd goal, you need to make makeable saves. And that was a makeable save. f*** off with your "emotion". I don't really care one way or the other about Darling or Ward. I want one of them to do well, but I have no horse. I call it like I see it. This is one game, and Darling has otherwise been average this year.

2 of the last 3 of you are really making me remember why I stopped posting here.

That's why I don't post much after losses. Everybody is cranky and everybody (myself included) feels like they know everything in the moment.

This is a game we definitely needed at least a point. Having the lead going into the 3rd doesn’t necessarily mean much, but a tie game late means at least a point was expected.

Darling simply needs to be better than he was tonight. With the offense as inconsistent as it is, we can’t afford to waste these 3-4 goal games.
