It’s a rebuild.
Semantics ..... Sure the market dictates the value....But to use an extreme example would you say Toronto overpayed for Clarkson?? Should NJ have tried to retain him and atleast match that pricetag??

He didn't pan out, but he was coming off a very good season. It's what other teams were willing to pay given an abundance of information we don't have.

Also a given year's $5 million is last years or two years ago $4 million. This is the way it has to be viewed.

What I'm saying is that the market might be thin on super-speedy, defensively-responsible middle-six forwards and a guy like Hagelin might command something like $5M. That may be the market value for a UFA of his caliber, but it would be an overpayment for us to give him that deal. We can't afford that for him. Just using hypotheticals here. Guys are often worth more on the open market than they are to their original teams. That's what I'm getting at when I say I'm afraid someone will overpay.

There will always be bad teams and bubble teams with plenty of cap space to throw at UFAs. Always.

Why do you think you rarely see the best teams in the NHL "catching the big fish" on the UFA market? They very likely don't have the cap space, or have it put aside for higher priorities in the near future.

id tend to agree with this...but how big of a cut remains to be seen. is he willing to go from 5 mil to 2 mil?

id doubt it, but that might be whats needed to keep this team together.

Have a look at this roster I threw together. Gives Hags and Stepan a nice raise, Talbot, Zucc, Stempniak, and Fast small raises, and MSL takes a $1.875M discount ($5.625 to 3.75).

You can absolutely pay more for something than it should be worth. We don't have to look at everything through the lens of the free market :yo:.

Also Hagelin is good. He doesn't get cushy zone starts and he plays against tough players.

8 points is tied for 5th on the team in scoring.

MSL and MZA will make more than that.

It's going to come down to this:

Option 1:
Keep
Staal
MSL
MZA

Option 2:
Keep
MSL
MZA
Hagelin

Option 3:
Keep
Staal
MSL
Hagelin

Option 4:
Keep
Staal
Hagelin
MZA

They will have to choose, (3) of the (4) players. You can't pay them all. I am assuming Stepan stays.

I think the hope may be for Fast to continue to develop and eventually replace what Hagelin does.

Completely agree. It will comedown to how important the team's management think of keeping Hagelin vs. Staal, MZA and MSA. We can include Stepan in this mix but it's pretty clear that it will be Stepan over Hagelin 10 out of 10 times. With MCD's injury keeping Staal at $6 m just proved to be a big necessity as well. I think it will come down to Hagelin vs. MZA or MSA.

Justifying Marc Staal at $6+ million for 5-6 years because of an injury to an otherwise healthy player is fairly weak logic.

Thing with MSL is he could sign one year deals until he retires. Since he's 35+, Rangers could take advantage of loading up on easily attainable bonuses that could be rolled over to give them some room.

He could. But he is towards the top of the team in scoring. He will get 4-5 million and that will be a sweetheart deal.

Staal's $6 m was justified (at least to me) even before the injury. Injury just underscored again how valuable a defenseman of his caliber is

I'm not thrilled with the idea of paying Staal 5 million at this point, let alone 6 million.

He has absolutely dominant defensive performances at times. That can't be argued.

But the sheer amount of games that he's woefully below average in ALL THREE zones alarmingly outweigh his good performances. They can't be ignored. Staal is a very inconsistent defenseman, and we would be paying him 6 million to play 30 great games, 32 below average games, and 20 god awful games.

Hagelin's episode of Beginnings

Was anyone able to record/ upload Hagelin's episode of Beginnings? I unfortunately live in the land of the Filthy Flyers and don't get MSG therefore I have to wait until they get put on youtube if they ever do.

Dude, 5 mil for Staal would be a steal, lol.

We don't need Staal anymore because Skjei will step right in some time over the next ten years.

I agree, he is not worth 5-6 mil$ - he barely play physical defense and is horrible at clearing players in front of Hank. I want to trade Staal to get some salary cap space,
which we need next season.

About Hags, an unique player and he usually shines in playoffs like last year. We need to keep him, because he is too hard to replace and I really like his abilities on the ice. :)
