This seems like a, I don’t know, ridiculously low cap number for a legit 1st line forward.

Yep, it feels like Tomas Tatar contract comparable, but Tatar was 0.51 points per game player at Detroit and Teräväinen is 0.79 points per game player from his last 2 seasons.

How does Carolina keep getting their guys signed to good deals? It's pretty damn impressive. Slavin and Pesce are also fantastic deals.
Teams, just on the upswing to greatness seem to be the teams that get the those great contracts signed. Being in that position for years has helped them contractually.

All the previous deals were done under the Francis regime. This is the first major extension worked out under new ownership, under which there were rumors of trouble during the Lindholm and Hanifin negotiations. And we know how those turned out... needless to say, this extension can put canes fans a bit more at ease.

It's good to see this happen with the new brain trust, as Slavin and Pesce were extended under Karmanos and Francis.

But it's not a consistent pattern in Carolina: you also have Lindholm and Hanifin who either wouldn't sign to a good deal or the GM Borg decided weren't worth their market value, so the deal with Calgary happened.

We're always a team that "looks to be taking the next step" (whether that's true or not) and players often want to be a part of that.

Plus, Raleigh's a great place to live. Good weather, fans and media don't really hassle the players, etc.

Nice deal considering inflation and Seattle expansion pushing up the cap.. this could be a steal in a couple years if he keeps up current trajectory.

2 RFA years
3 UFA years

He has been 5 seasons in NHL, and everybody will be UFA after 7 seasons.

If I would guess:

4.4M - RFA year
4.7M - RFA year
5.7M - UFA year
6.0M - UFA year
6.2M - UFA year
-----------------
5.4M average

Two UFA years. 2014-15 had only 34 Regular Season games, 40 are needed for an Accrued Season for UFA purposes.

The Nylander effect. Teravainen produces like Nylander, but signed for about $1.6 mil per less. Yes, Nylander is younger and has higher potential, but Teravainen was closer to free agency coming off a bridge contract. They're comparable enough.

2 years older and 1.5 years of similar production in addition to 1 year of term fewer. You could easily see the difference in value.

And Teravainen signed coming off a bridge contract, whereas Nylander signed after an ELC. That negates some of those factors.

Not to say Nylander is overpaid. I think Teravainen took a healthy discount.

Fair deal. Could be a steal depending on how TT progresses in the next couple of years.

I think it's a fair contract for both sides. He's a complimentary player and it's not a coincidence once Aho got comfortable in the league TT's been a 60 point guy. If you put him on a 2nd line on a contender, playing closer to 16 minutes than the ~18 he's getting now, he's probably more like a 50 point winger. For example Bolts gave JT Miller 5.25x 5 and i think that's a pretty good comparable.

Good for TT to get paid and good for the Canes not to overpay just because they're short on wingers.
