The short handed goals against has gotten pretty annoying these past couple of years

Expand the timeline. It's been more than a couple of years. The increase is noticeable in 2017. Wasn't that Carslon's last season before signing big extension. Was it somehow related...perhaps he was taking a lot of chances to squeeze in more PP points? Let the conspiracy theories begin.

For the stat nerds, SHGA that past 10 years

To me the big issue is that when you combined PP goals scored and short handed goals against we go from a top ten PP to an almost bottom 10 PP.

The shorthanded goal is largely a result of a 1-3-1 power play format. The Caps have 1 defenseman at the top and two guys at the hash marks on the circles. If Carlson or Ov's shots get blocked or a pass jumps over a stick on the halfwall, its a 2 on 1 going the other way. Note that its almost always a 2 on 1 against Carlson.

If Ov is going to shoot from his office he has to be there when Backstrom has the puck on the other halfwall. He doesnt drift up to the blue line for defensive reasons because he needs to be where the shot is already

If I had to wager, I'd say 1/3 Ovechkin's 'back checking', 1/3 Carlson getting walked and 1/3 miscellaneous.
I would say that OV has actually back-checked better than Carlson when being forced to defend during their PP's. Carlson has looked really awful at times. I'm wondering if he has full strength in that surgically repaired knee of his?

Carlson is the more liability in that situation and not OV!

As others have mentioned, giving up short handed opportunities on the PP is not a new problem. It has been a serious issue for the past 2+ seasons and the trend is not moving in the right direction so far this year.

Capitals have given up short handed goals at the 2nd highest rate in the league for the last two seasons, sandwiched in between Buffalo and Detroit. IMO, that's not good company to be in. I think it's a combination of Carlson/Ovechkin manning the points and some iffy goaltending. Samsonov and Vanecek have the 3rd and 4th worst PP save percentage respectively among goaltenders with 100+ minutes of PP ice time over the last two seasons. Total of 68 goalies in there.
